Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a candidate to fill a full-time Senior Civil Site Engineer position in either our McHenry, IL, Peoria, IL, or Houston, TX office. Consideration of additional locations for the right candidate could include Lisle, IL; Kansas City, MO; St. Louis, MO; or Springfield, IL, as will fully remote scenarios.

Position Profile


This person is expected to work as part of multidisciplinary design teams to plan and execute infrastructure projects for a variety of clients primarily within the industrial, site development, ports/multimodal freight, and manufacturing areas, with opportunities to work on projects in other markets, such as Power and Infrastructure.


Projects are likely to include reconstruction and rehabilitation of industrial infrastructure such as roads, rail, utilities; highways and roads, culverts and storm sewer, stormwater detention, rail grade crossings, signing, pavement marking, and traffic control plans for construction. Greenfield and Brownfield projects may include site development or redevelopment. Power projects may include substations, solar farms, wind farms, and battery storage facilities, while Infrastructure projects may include municipal projects, bike trails, parks, parking lots, and commercial site development.


Position requires the ability to serve as a key member of the project design team developing designs and providing direction to junior level engineers and CADD/Technician staff in the areas of civil and site design including but not limited to; grading, storm water design, rail and roadways, utilities, and agency and railroad coordination. Position requires the ability to work on a variety of projects, take directions from multiple project managers, and coordinate with other staff.

A Day in the Life of a Senior Civil Engineer at Hanson

Here's a snapshot of what you would do in this role:

  • Work within the Sitework discipline as a key member supporting design development for predominantly industrial clients across the nation and North and Central America, focused on delivery of logistics-focused projects
  • Preparation and review of complex design calculations.
  • Preparation and review of construction documents for rehabilitation of industrial infrastructure such as roads, rail, utilities; and highways and roads, culverts and storm sewer, rail grade crossings, signing, pavement marking, and traffic control plans for construction.
  • Opportunity to manage and develop junior staff.
  • Work with project managers to develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and lists of deliverables for related tasks.
  • Work with clients to deliver cost effective and constructable projects.
  • Deliver design tasks on time and within budget.
  • Provide technical support to other areas of Hanson.
  • Review contractor submittals and observe construction on-site to assess conformance with plans and specifications.
  • Interact with clients to discuss existing and future projects and how to cost effectively deliver a project to meet client requirements.
  • Participate in development of proposals.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and other disciplines to help track project backlog and staffing requirements and support integrated project delivery.

The following qualifications would set you up for success in this role:


Education/Training:

  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field is required.
  • 10 or more years of general civil engineering experience with an emphasis on site development. Railway and/or roadway engineering experience is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer license in state of assigned office or the ability to reciprocate from another state within 6 months. Additional licensure as a Professional Engineer in Texas and/or Louisiana or in a Canadian province would be viewed favorably.

Salary Range: $110,000 - $150,000, based on years and level of experience
