Job description


Hilltop Holdings is looking for a Senior Data Engineer! The Senior Data Engineer is a key technical leader responsible for the design, maintenance, and optimization of enterprise data systems across on-premises and cloud environments. This hybrid role combines traditional DBA responsibilities with advanced engineering work in Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Fabric. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in database administration, data platform modernization, and cloud-based architecture, particularly in leading on-prem to Azure migrations.
Responsibilities
Traditional DBA Responsibilities:
  • Administer, monitor, and maintain high-availability SQL Server environments (OLTP/OLAP).

  • Perform daily operational DBA tasks: backups, restores, index maintenance, integrity checks, performance tuning, and job management.

  • Implement and manage HA/DR solutions (AlwaysOn, failover clustering, log shipping, etc.).

  • Troubleshoot database performance issues using tools like SQL Profiler, Query Store, and DMVs.

  • Enforce database security, compliance policies, user access controls, and role-based permissions.

  • Maintain documentation for data systems, configurations, and standard operating procedures.

  • Maintain db replication: Qlik Attunity, Shadowbase, SQL Log Shipping

  • Understanding of dimensional modeling concepts.

Cloud Data Engineering (Azure):
  • Maintain Azure SQL, Azure Synapse, and Azure Data Lake environments.

  • Execute on-prem to Azure migration projects, including re-platforming, data replication, and testing.

  • Optimize cost, performance, and scalability of cloud-based data solutions.

  • Implement monitoring and alerting across cloud environments using tools like Azure Monitor and Log Analytics.

  • Participate in the deployment and configuration of Microsoft Fabric for enterprise data workloads.

  • Ensure compatibility between legacy systems and Fabric components to support unified analytics.

  • Collaborate with data architects to modernize data platforms and contribute to data governance initiatives.

Collaboration & Leadership:
  • Work cross-functionally with Data Architects, BI Developers, and Infrastructure teams.

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide peer reviews for code, queries, and processes.

  • Act as SME for database infrastructure and cloud architecture in planning and strategy sessions.

  • Maintain awareness of industry best practices and emerging trends in data engineering.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field preferred. Combination of equivalent relevant work experience and high school diploma or GED required.

  • 7+ years of experience as a Database Administrator or Data Engineer.

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with Azure Data Services

  • Experience leading on-prem to Azure migrations.

  • Experience with replication tools: Qlik Attunity, Shadowbase, SQL log shipping

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouse and Data Warehouse workloads.

  • Strong T-SQL skills and knowledge of indexing, partitioning, and query optimization.

  • Experience with CI/CD, scripting, and automation in PowerShell, Python, or Azure DevOps.

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.

  • Highly motivated individual with strong sense of ownership.

  • Must be proactive with solid organizational and time management skills.

  • Exceptional written and verbal skills.
