What is a junior data conversion developer?

Junior Data Conversion Developers are entry-level professionals who assist in transforming data from one format to another, often as part of system migrations, software upgrades, or data integration projects. They work under the guidance of senior developers and typically use programming languages, scripts, or specialized tools to extract, transform, and load (ETL) data. Their responsibilities often include analyzing source and target data structures, writing conversion routines, testing data integrity, and troubleshooting issues. This role is crucial for organizations that need to move or consolidate data while ensuring accuracy and minimal disruption.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior data conversion developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Data Conversion Developer, you need a solid understanding of database concepts, data mapping, and proficiency in programming languages like SQL or Python, often supported by a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with ETL tools (such as Informatica or Talend), data migration frameworks, and source/target system architectures is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help in identifying data issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate, efficient data transformation and integration, which are critical for project success and data integrity.

What are some common challenges faced by junior data conversion developers during migration projects?

Junior Data Conversion Developers often encounter challenges such as handling inconsistent or incomplete legacy data, adapting to different data formats, and ensuring data integrity throughout the migration process. Collaborating closely with senior developers and business analysts is crucial to accurately interpret client requirements and resolve data discrepancies. Additionally, managing time effectively to meet project deadlines while learning new tools and technologies can be demanding, but it also provides significant opportunities for skill development and growth within the field.

The team owns the full lifecycle of the ERP ecosystem-from architecture and development through go-live and ongoing production support-across one or more functional areas including Finance, Manufacturing, and Sales & Distribution, making this a high-impact role with broad visibility across the organization.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and maintain JDE customizations, orchestrations, and integrations with third-party systems with a heavy focus on:

  • Analyze and optimize business processes across functional areas through ERP and integration enhancements.
  • Perform code reviews and enforce development standards, documentation practices, and best practices across the team.

  • Document technical solutions, integration architecture, and system configurations to maintain a robust knowledge base.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and training to junior team members on ERP development practices and tools.
  • Participate in AI-assisted work item discovery: contribute to recorded sessions, review AI-drafted work items, and refine requirements collaboratively before ARB review.

Position Requirements:
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in ERP development, with demonstrated JDE expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to architect, document, and deliver end-to-end technical solutions across the full ERP development lifecycle.
  • Advanced proficiency in JDE customization tools including Form Design Aid, Report Design Aid, Business Function development, and Orchestrator.
  • Strong understanding of ERP-related business processes across one or more functional areas (Finance, Manufacturing, Sales & Distribution), with experience translating business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Strong communication skills; able to present technical concepts clearly to non-technical business partners.
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior engineers and contributing to team standards and best practices.
  • Proficiency in applying AI tools to ERP development workflows-such as AI-assisted coding, intelligent automation, and AI-driven process analysis-to improve quality and delivery speed.
  • Strong code review discipline applied to both human- and agent-generated output; ability to identify defects, security gaps, and quality issues.
  • Commitment to human-accountable engineering: all output approved by a person before release, no exceptions.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with JDE functional modules across multiple areas such as Finance, Manufacturing, Sales & Distribution, or Transportation Management.
  • Experience with key third-party systems in the Trek ERP ecosystem, including DSI (warehouse/distribution), Transform (data transformation), ProShip (shipping), Loftware (labeling), and Basware (accounts payable).
  • Experience with integration development using APIs, EDI, web services, or middleware/SOA platforms, including familiarity with JDE Orchestrator Framework or cloud integration tools.
