What is a junior computer vision?

Junior Computer Vision Engineers are entry-level professionals who work on developing and implementing algorithms that allow computers to interpret and process visual information from the world, such as images and videos. They typically assist in building models for tasks like object detection, image classification, and facial recognition. These engineers often work under the guidance of senior team members, helping with data preprocessing, model training, and performance evaluation. The role requires a foundation in programming, mathematics, and machine learning, as well as familiarity with libraries like OpenCV or TensorFlow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior computer vision?

To thrive as a Junior Computer Vision Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, programming (especially Python or C++), and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), OpenCV, and experience working with image processing libraries are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are valuable soft skills. These competencies are crucial for developing accurate computer vision models and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What are some common challenges faced by junior computer vision engineers in their first year on the job?

Junior Computer Vision engineers often encounter challenges such as bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application, dealing with large and noisy datasets, and optimizing models for performance and accuracy. They may also need to quickly learn new frameworks or libraries and adapt to the fast-paced development cycles typical in tech environments. Collaboration with data scientists, software engineers, and product teams is essential, so developing strong communication skills and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams is key to success.

What is the difference between Junior Computer Vision vs Junior Machine Learning Engineer?

Job description

Role: Senior Software Engineer Android / AI / Computer Vision

Location: Lincolnshire, Illinois (Hybrid)

Duration: 6+ Months

Description:

Analyzes, develops, designs, and maintains software for the organization's products and systems, with a strong focus on customer-facing Android applications, multi-platform solutions, and background services. Performs system integration of software and hardware to maintain throughput and program consistency. Determines and develops approaches to solutions, establishing requirements for complex software design projects. Works independently with little day-to-day instruction, exercising judgment in selecting methods and techniques to solve unique problems, and frequently collaborating with cross-functional teams and external customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Application & Full-Stack Development: Develop and maintain customer-facing applications using traditional Android development (Kotlin/Java), multi-platform frameworks (React Native), and web application technologies.
  • Backend Integration: Seamlessly connect mobile and web frontends with backend services, ensuring efficient data synchronization and program consistency.
  • AI & Vision Integration: Integrate and migrate computer vision, OCR, and barcode decoding capabilities using AI/vision SDKs. Optimize camera APIs for real-time and single-shot capture workflows.
  • Architecture & Refactoring: Refactor prototype codebases into modular, maintainable architectures (e.g., multi-module Gradle projects with clean SDK abstraction layers).
  • Quality & Testing: Build automated test harnesses and benchmarking tools to validate recognition accuracy, matching performance, and regression behavior. Complete all phases of software design, conduct final inspections, participate in code reviews, and identify/recode problematic sections early.
  • Feature Implementation: Implement template management features, including zone/field definition UIs, auto-detection of text/barcode elements, template profiles, and conflict detection. Prioritize features to ensure the most critical items are implemented first.
  • Performance & Innovation: Contribute to on-device performance profiling (latency, memory). Prototype approaches to challenging data extraction problems (e.g., barcode-vs-OCR trade-offs). Apply existing and new technologies in novel ways to improve performance and productivity.
  • Documentation: Develop, validate, and test structures and user documentation for internal engineering consumption and external customer reference.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in an appropriate engineering discipline required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Mobile & Multi-platform: Strong Android application development skills (Kotlin/Java) including background services and modern Android tooling. Proven experience with multi-platform frameworks (React Native) and web application development.
  • Backend & Systems: Solid experience with backend integration and building end-to-end customer applications.
  • Vision & AI Knowledge: Working knowledge of computer vision, camera APIs, and OCR concepts (image preprocessing, feature/template matching, text detection and recognition, barcode symbologies).
  • Engineering Fundamentals: Solid software engineering fundamentals including Git, code review, unit/integration testing, and CI concepts.
  • Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to work independently on loosely defined problems. Ability to network with senior internal/external personnel and potentially influence the activities of junior-level staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced AI/ML: Experience integrating third-party or platform AI/ML SDKs into mobile applications, or experience with on-device ML inference on Android (e.g., TensorFlow Lite, Qualcomm AI stack, NPU/DSP acceleration).
  • Modern AI Tools: Familiarity with modern AI tools and the ability to apply them pragmatically in engineering workflows (e.g., AI-assisted development, LLM-based post-processing of extracted data).
  • Domain Expertise: Background in enterprise mobility, data capture, warehouse/logistics, or scanning solutions.
  • Vision Libraries: Experience with OpenCV or similar vision libraries.
  • Developer Ecosystem: Experience building developer-facing samples, blueprints, or reference applications.
  • Data & Provisioning: Familiarity with structured data formats and schema design (JSON), and with device provisioning via MDM.
