Job description

Responsibilities

The Junior Android Developer will contribute to customer-facing Android features, bug fixes, tests, and technical improvements while learning the team's product, architecture, and delivery practices. Working with experienced engineers, product partners, and designers, this person will turn clear requirements into maintainable Kotlin code and steadily expand the scope and independence of their work.  This position will be in one of the following locations: Falls Church, VA, Aurora, CO, San Antonio, TX, or Tacoma, WA.

Core responsibilities:

Implement well-scoped Android features and bug fixes in Kotlin under the guidance of more experienced engineers. Build user interfaces with Jetpack Compose and/or Android Views according to product and design requirements. Write and maintain unit, integration, and UI tests appropriate to the change being delivered. Use Git and the team's development workflow to create focused changes, request review, and address feedback. Investigate defects using reproduction steps, logs, debuggers, crash reports, and help from teammates when needed. Collaborate with product, design, backend, quality, and mobile peers to clarify expected behavior and edge cases. Participate in planning, standups, demos, retrospectives, and release activities. Document relevant implementation details and share useful learnings with the team. Follow established practices for accessibility, performance, security, privacy, analytics, and error handling. Ask timely questions, communicate blockers clearly, and take an active role in feedback and professional growth.

  • Experience building at least one Android application through coursework, an internship, a bootcamp, employment, open-source work, or a personal project.
  • Basic familiarity with REST APIs, JSON, asynchronous work, local data storage, and common debugging tools.
  • Ability to write readable code, break down a small problem, and explain implementation choices.
  • Working knowledge of Git or another version-control system.
  • Interest in automated testing and willingness to learn the team's quality practices.
  • Clear communication, curiosity, follow-through, and receptiveness to feedback.
  • Authorization and location eligibility consistent with the company's approved hiring policy.

  • Exposure to Jetpack Compose, coroutines, Flow, ViewModel, dependency injection, or common Android architecture patterns.
  • Familiarity with Android Studio, Gradle, emulators, device testing, and Google Play release concepts.
  • Experience consuming APIs, modeling UI state, handling loading and error conditions, or caching local data.
  • Basic knowledge of mobile accessibility, performance, privacy, or secure coding practices.
  • Exposure to CI/CD, code review, agile delivery, or collaboration on a shared codebase.
  • Interest in iOS, Kotlin Multiplatform, or another mobile platform; cross-platform experience is welcome but not required.
