What does an embedded Android developer do?

An Embedded Android Developer specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining Android-based software that runs on embedded systems, such as smart devices, IoT gadgets, automotive infotainment systems, and specialized hardware. Their work involves integrating the Android operating system with hardware components, optimizing performance, and ensuring reliable communication between the hardware and software layers. They often collaborate with hardware engineers and use low-level programming to customize Android for specific devices, ensuring that applications and system features function seamlessly in resource-constrained environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded Android developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Android Developer, you need strong programming skills in Java, C/C++, and a solid understanding of embedded systems and Android OS architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with tools like Android Studio, AOSP, Git, and experience with hardware debugging or cross-compilation is typically required. Problem-solving, adaptability, and effective collaboration are critical soft skills for integrating software with hardware and working across multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the delivery of robust, efficient embedded Android solutions that meet both technical requirements and user needs.

What are some common challenges faced by embedded Android developers when integrating Android with custom hardware?

Embedded Android Developers often encounter challenges related to hardware compatibility, limited resources, and real-time performance constraints. Integrating Android with custom hardware may require writing device drivers, optimizing for low power consumption, and troubleshooting hardware-software interactions. Close collaboration with hardware engineers and thorough testing on target devices are essential to ensure a stable and efficient system. Additionally, keeping up with Android OS updates while maintaining hardware support can be a continuous challenge.

Job description

Company Overview
ACS (Allen Control Systems) is a defense technology company building precision robotic systems for the United States and its allies. Founded by two former U.S. Navy electrical engineers with deep experience in robotics and software, ACS brings together AI, computer vision, precision motion, and advanced hardware to solve complex defense challenges across land, air, and maritime environments.

Our flagship product, Bullfrog, is an autonomous precision weapon system that transforms existing weapons into highly accurate counter-drone systems — giving warfighters a scalable, cost-effective response to one of the fastest-growing threats on the modern battlefield. Bullfrog is deployed with U.S. forces, and ACS works with organizations throughout the U.S. military and national security community.

Following a $200 million Series B at a $2.2 billion valuation, ACS is rapidly expanding manufacturing, accelerating Bullfrog deployments, and developing the next generation of autonomous battlefield systems. This is an opportunity to join a proven, fast-moving team and help scale technology with direct, real-world impact on national security.

ACS is headquartered in Austin, Texas, with additional operations in Alexandria, Virginia; Mountain View, California; and Huntsville, Alabama. For more information, visit allencontrolsystems.com.

About The Role:

We are looking for an Android Developer to join our team, focusing on building performant, real-time Android applications that power our next-generation remote weapon systems. This role requires strong native Android development skills in Kotlin. Experience with game or simulation-style applications on Android is highly desirable.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a fast-paced startup environment with cutting-edge technology and direct impact on product design and function.

What You'll Do:

  • Design and develop native Android applications using Kotlin for performance-critical use cases.

  • Build and maintain Jetpack Compose interfaces for Android-based tablets and embedded systems.

  • Collaborate closely with back-end developers to integrate APIs and ensure seamless communication across systems.

  • Optimize applications for responsiveness, low latency, and smooth user interactions in demanding environments.

  • Support game-like interactions such as joystick/gamepad input and visual targeting overlays.

  • Work with product managers and UX/UI designers to implement clean, functional interfaces tailored for defense applications.

  • Stay current with Android development trends, continuously improving application architecture and performance.

  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving code quality and team performance.

What You'll Need:

  • A strong passion for Android development and building responsive, real-time systems.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

  • 4+ years of experience in Android development with proven proficiency in Kotlin and Java.

  • Experience with state management using MVVM/MVI patterns, Kotlin Flows, and Jetpack Compose.

  • Experience with Android Studio and Gradle, including build configuration, dependency management, and build variants/flavors.

  • Familiarity with game development concepts, input handling (e.g., controllers), and UI/UX for fast interaction.

  • Experience working with RESTful APIs and WebSockets.

  • Comfortable with Git, CI/CD workflows, and writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code.

  • A desire to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced startup environment.

You'll Stand Out:

  • Experience with Compose Multiplatform

  • Experience with Multi Display / Presentation API

  • Experience building or contributing to Android games or simulations

  • Knowledge of real-time data handling and performance optimization

  • Exposure to cloud services like AWS or GCP, and tools like Docker or Kubernetes

  • Previous work with ruggedized or embedded Android devices

What We Offer:

  • Competitive salary

  • ACS Equity Package

  • Health, Dental, Vision Insurance

  • Paid Time Off
