Job description

Sr. Software Engineer, Middleware

Shelton, CT or Miami, FL

Why Join Subway?

At Subway, we are not standing still. We are building.

This is a business focused on what matters most: growing franchisee profitability, strengthening our brand and creating long-term value. The people who thrive here are the ones who want to make a real impact.

You will not just do the work. You will shape it.

We move fast. We think like owners. We make decisions that matter. We hold ourselves to a high standard because what we do directly impacts thousands of franchisees around the world.

If you bring energy, accountability and a bias for action, you will fit right in.

We take the work seriously, but we also know the best results come from teams that support each other, celebrate wins and show up ready to build something better every day.

This is your chance to be part of what’s next.

About this role

Subway is on a mission to build a world-class digital platform that serves millions of guests and thousands of franchise locations globally. The Senior Software Engineer, Middleware is a key technical contributor on the team that powers the integration layer connecting Subway’s front-end applications (iOS, Android, Web, Kiosk) with our internal and external partner systems.

You’ll design, build, and maintain high-performance APIs and services on AWS, collaborating closely with product, architecture, and partner engineering teams. You’ll also own integrations with major third-party delivery and marketplace platforms — including DoorDash, Uber Eats, and similar partners — ensuring seamless order flow, menu synchronization, and operational reliability across channels.

This is a hands-on engineering role with real ownership. AI-assisted development is a core part of how our team works — you’ll be expected to leverage tools like GitHub Copilot and Claude daily to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and solve complex problems faster.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and document new and enhanced APIs as part of the Subway middleware platform, supporting both internal system integration and external partner connectivity.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, and similar) as a core part of daily engineering work — from code generation and refactoring to test coverage and documentation. Champion AI tooling adoption across the team.
  • Build and maintain integrations with third-party delivery and marketplace partners (e.g., DoorDash, Uber Eats, and similar platforms), ensuring reliable order flow, menu synchronization, and real-time operational data exchange.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders and product teams to understand functional and technical requirements; translate those into scalable, maintainable architecture and implementation plans.
  • Conduct constructive code reviews and provide technical design guidance to peers and junior engineers, raising the overall quality and consistency of team output.
  • Enforce data governance, security policies, and compliance standards throughout the software development lifecycle.

Technology Stack

Our middleware platform is built on the following core technologies. Strong familiarity with this stack is expected:

AWS Lambda

API Gateway

DynamoDB

SQS / SNS

Node.js / TypeScript

Terraform / IaC

GitHub / ADO

Dynatrace / APM

OpenAPI / Swagger

AI Code Assistants

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)

Experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on production software development experience
  • Demonstrated experience building and operating RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs at scale
  • Strong proficiency in one or more of: JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js), Java, or C#
  • Experience with serverless architectures on AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS)
  • Solid understanding of integration patterns: event-driven architecture, webhooks, async messaging, and pub/sub
  • Experience integrating with third-party platforms and vendor APIs (e.g., delivery aggregators, POS systems, loyalty platforms, or similar ecosystem partners)
  • Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, or equivalent) — must be comfortable using AI daily to write, review, refactor, and document code
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and source control workflows (Git, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps)
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation)

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong debugging, root-cause analysis, and production incident management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including technical documentation and stakeholder-facing artifacts
  • Ability to translate ambiguous business requirements into clear technical specifications
  • Collaborative mindset with a willingness to give and receive candid code review feedback

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience integrating with DoorDash Drive, Uber Eats, or other major delivery/marketplace platform APIs
  • Experience with multi-region AWS deployments and global traffic management (Akamai, CloudFront)
  • Familiarity with identity and authentication patterns: OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, AWS Cognito
  • Hands-on experience with observability platforms (Dynatrace, Datadog, CloudWatch)
  • Experience prompting, fine-tuning, or orchestrating LLMs/AI agents as part of a software delivery workflow
  • Experience in QSR, retail, or e-commerce domains
  • AWS Certified Developer – Associate or higher
  • Exposure to React Native or cross-platform mobile app integration patterns

What You’ll Be Part Of

Subway’s Digital & Consumer Technology team is in the middle of a major platform transformation — migrating legacy systems to modern cloud-native architecture, building new consumer experiences across mobile, web, and kiosk, and expanding our global digital footprint. You’ll join a team that:

  • Ships production code that reaches millions of guests every day
  • Owns the full stack from design through deployment and operation
  • Values engineering quality, documentation, and technical craft
  • Is actively growing in-house capability and reducing reliance on external vendors
  • Moves fast but maintains high standards for reliability, security, and scalability

What do we offer?

  • Insurance Plans (Medical, Life)
  • Pension/401K/RSP (country specific)
  • Competitive Bonus
  • Mobility Allowance
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Company Holidays
  • Volunteering time
