Job description

As a Senior Digital Android Engineer at Citi, you will serve as the senior technical authority for Android development, leading the architecture and delivery of our flagship mobile banking application used by millions of customers globally. This is a high-impact engineering leadership role where your decisions directly shape the quality, scalability, and performance of Citi's Android platform. Sitting within the mobile engineering function, you will drive technical direction, elevate engineering standards, and mentor the next generation of Android talent.

Responsibilities
  • Architect and lead the end-to-end design and development of major features for Citi's flagship Android application, ensuring every solution is scalable, resilient, and built to last.
  • Act as the primary Android technical authority across the engineering function, setting direction on the modern Android tech stack including Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and Coroutines.
  • Define and enforce engineering standards for code quality, automated testing, and application performance, resolving critical defects and eliminating bottlenecks that affect end users.
  • Coach and mentor junior and mid-level Android engineers, building technical capability across the team and creating a culture of continuous improvement and engineering excellence.
  • Partner with Product Managers, UI/UX Designers, and backend engineers to translate complex business and user requirements into robust, high-quality mobile experiences.
  • Optimize application performance across memory management, battery efficiency, and runtime speed to deliver a consistently smooth experience on Android devices.
  • Evaluate and improve development processes, testing strategies, and delivery workflows to increase engineering velocity and reduce time-to-production.
  • Assess technical and operational risk during key engineering decisions, ensuring solutions align with Citi's standards for security, compliance, and platform reliability.
Required qualifications & skills
  • 8 or more years of professional experience building native Android applications, with a portfolio that demonstrates depth across the full Android development lifecycle.
  • Expert command of Kotlin, coupled with a thorough understanding of modern Android architecture patterns such as MVVM, Clean Architecture, and unidirectional data flow.
  • Deep hands-on knowledge of the Android SDK, Android Studio, and the Gradle build system, with the ability to configure and optimize complex multi-module builds.
  • Extensive experience with Jetpack libraries, including Jetpack Compose for building declarative UIs at production scale.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve performance issues related to memory, rendering, and battery consumption in production Android applications.
  • Track record of shipping or maintaining at least one application on the Google Play Store, with direct accountability for release quality and store presence.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Beneficial skills & qualifications
  • Experience leading technical decisions in a formal or informal capacity across cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with agile and waterfall delivery models and the ability to manage dependencies across both in a large-scale engineering environment.
  • Background in mobile engineering within regulated industries such as financial services, where security, compliance, and audit considerations shape development decisions.
What we offer

Citi offers a compelling environment for senior engineers who want to build at scale, lead with authority, and deliver technology that has a measurable impact on millions of people worldwide. You will have the autonomy to make meaningful technical decisions, the support of a high-caliber engineering team, and access to the tools and resources needed to grow your career over the long term.

  • A hybrid working model with 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely, giving you flexibility alongside meaningful in-person collaboration.
  • Competitive compensation and a comprehensive financial wellbeing package, including access to long-term savings and investment programs.
  • Access structured learning and development resources, enabling you to deepen technical expertise and expand into leadership at your own pace.
  • The opportunity to work on Android applications used by a global customer base, giving your engineering decisions real-world scale and impact.
  • Wellbeing support programs covering physical, mental, and financial health, designed to help you perform at your best inside and outside of work.
