Jr Full Stack Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Jr Full Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Jr Full Stack Developer, you need foundational skills in front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (such as Node.js, Python, or Java) programming, along with a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems like Git, and basic understanding of databases are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a willingness to learn help you stand out in collaborative and fast-changing environments. These skills and qualities enable you to build, maintain, and improve end-to-end web applications efficiently while adapting to evolving project requirements.

What are some common challenges Jr Full Stack Developers face when transitioning from academic projects to professional work environments?

Jr Full Stack Developers often find the transition from academic or personal projects to professional settings challenging due to stricter coding standards, collaboration requirements, and larger codebases. In a professional environment, working with version control systems like Git, following agile practices, and communicating effectively with cross-functional teams become essential. Adapting to frequent code reviews and learning to debug complex, existing applications can also be a steep learning curve. However, these challenges provide valuable opportunities to develop technical proficiency and teamwork skills that are crucial for career growth.

What are Jr Full Stack Developers?

Jr Full Stack Developers are entry-level professionals who work on both the front-end and back-end aspects of web applications. They are typically familiar with technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and one or more back-end languages like Python, Java, or Node.js. Their responsibilities often include assisting in building, testing, and maintaining software applications under the guidance of senior developers. While they may not have deep expertise in all areas, Jr Full Stack Developers are expected to be adaptable and eager to learn new technologies. This role provides a solid foundation for advancing to more specialized or senior development positions.

As the Health Data Office team within TELUS Health our mission is to responsibly leverage health data for innovation, unlocking vast potential with AI, data enablement, and interoperability. Our focus: delivering high-value health analytics, advancing the forefront of health technology for a healthier world.

TELUS Health is seeking a senior technical leader to join our Data Engineering organization as a Senior Architect, responsible for the end-to-end architecture of large-scale, data-centric platforms where data pipelines, complex workflows, and streaming systems are the core product. In this role, you will collaborate with a diverse, highly skilled team of Data Engineers, Full Stack Developers, DBAs, Cloud Engineers, AI/ML Engineers, and healthcare professionals to design and evolve real-time and batch data platforms operating across AWS and Google Cloud Platform environments, with primary depth in GCP. We are looking for an architect with a proven track record of designing production-grade, data-intensive systems that integrate scalable data pipelines, APIs, and data-centric microservices into cohesive, reliable, and compliant platforms built for long-term evolution.

What you will do
  • Lead enterprise-level architecture for TELUS Health data platforms, spanning ingestion, streaming, transformation, storage, APIs, and consumption
  • Architect complex data workflows and high-volume streaming pipelines, leveraging platforms such as Kafka, Pub/Sub, Apache Flink, Dataflow, PySpark and BigQuery
  • Define architectural patterns for event-driven, stateful, and hybrid batch/stream systems
  • Establish standards for data modeling, schema management, versioning, and interoperability (including FHIR R4)
  • Design data-centric microservices and APIs, with strong data contracts and lifecycle management
  • Drive multi-cloud, cloud-native data architecture across GCP and AWS (GCP emphasis)
  • Embed data governance, privacy, compliance, and reliability into platform design
  • Act as a senior technical authority, mentoring engineers and influencing architectural direction across teams
  • Orchestrate cross-functional projects involving healthcare IT professionals, data scientists, and clinical experts
What you bring
  • Degree in computer science, computer engineering or related field
  • 10+ years designing and delivering large-scale, data-intensive platforms
  • Deep expertise in data architecture, including streaming pipelines, complex transformations, and distributed processing
  • Proven ability to design end-to-end systems integrating data pipelines, storage, APIs, and services
  • Strong understanding of event-driven architectures and data-centric microservices
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native data platforms, including services such as Pub/Sub, Dataflow, BigQuery, Kafka, Flink,  PySpark and BigQuery
  • Experience designing systems where data scale, correctness, latency, and reliability are critical
  • Modern development practices and experience with AI-assisted coding and productivity tools
  • Strong grasp of data governance, security, and privacy in regulated environments

Nice to have

  • Healthcare or clinical data experience
  • Real-time analytics or AI/ML-enabled data platforms
  • GCP or AWS Professional Certifications
  • Advanced degree  or PHD in computer science, engineering, or related field
