Jig information

What is a jig?

A jig job typically involves designing, building, or using jigs—specialized tools or fixtures that hold parts in place during manufacturing or assembly. Jigs help ensure precision, repeatability, and efficiency in machining, woodworking, or other production processes. Workers in this role may create, modify, or maintain jigs to improve workflow and product quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the jig position, and why are they important?

A Jig Builder or Jig Technician generally requires mechanical aptitude, blueprint reading skills, and a background in machining or fabrication, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with measurement tools (such as calipers and micrometers), CAD systems, and precision assembly equipment is typically essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective problem-solving are critical soft skills in this role. These qualifications and abilities are necessary to ensure that jigs and fixtures are constructed accurately and efficiently, supporting quality and productivity in manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges faced by a jig builder or jig technician on the job?

Jig Builders often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex engineering drawings, maintaining tight tolerances, and troubleshooting unexpected issues during assembly. The role can also demand adaptability when working with new materials or adjusting jigs for updated production specifications. As part of a manufacturing team, Jig Technicians frequently collaborate with engineers, machinists, and quality inspectors to ensure that tooling supports smooth workflow. Overcoming these challenges requires strong technical knowledge and proactive communication, both of which are developed with hands-on experience and ongoing training.
