What is a jig grinder?

A Jig Grinder is a specialized machining position that involves operating a jig grinding machine to create precision holes, contours, and surfaces in metal or other materials. These machines use high-speed grinding wheels to achieve extremely tight tolerances, often within microns. Jig Grinders typically work from blueprints, setting up and adjusting the machine to ensure accuracy. This role requires knowledge of machine operation, tool selection, and precision measurement techniques.

What does a jig grinder do?

A typical day for a Jig Grinder involves setting up and operating precision grinding machines to create or repair components to exact specifications. You’ll frequently interpret blueprints, inspect finished parts for accuracy, and perform machine maintenance to ensure optimal performance. The role often requires close collaboration with engineers, quality control inspectors, and other machinists to resolve technical challenges and ensure that production standards are met. This team-based approach helps maintain efficiency and high-quality output in manufacturing environments. Over time, strong performance can lead to advancement into supervisory or specialist roles within the machine shop.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a jig grinder?

To thrive as a Jig Grinder, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience with industrial grinders, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training in machining. Familiarity with jig grinding machines, micrometers, calipers, blueprints, and sometimes CNC controls is important.
