What is a Jenkins Engineer?

A Jenkins Engineer is an IT professional who specializes in using Jenkins, an open-source automation server, to design, implement, and maintain continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. Their main responsibilities include automating build, test, and deployment processes to streamline software development workflows. Jenkins Engineers also troubleshoot pipeline issues, integrate Jenkins with other tools, and ensure that deployment processes are reliable and scalable. They often collaborate closely with developers, DevOps teams, and quality assurance engineers to improve overall software delivery efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Jenkins Engineer?

To thrive as a Jenkins Engineer, you need expertise in continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) concepts, scripting languages (like Groovy, Shell, or Python), and a background in software development or DevOps. Familiarity with Jenkins pipelines, plugin management, automation tools, and experience with cloud platforms or containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) are highly valued, as are certifications like Jenkins Engineer or DevOps certifications. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure seamless automation, robust build and release processes, and efficient collaboration between development and operations teams.

How does a Jenkins Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams during the software delivery process?

A Jenkins Engineer plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between development and operations teams by automating build, test, and deployment pipelines. They regularly meet with developers to understand application requirements and ensure CI/CD pipelines are tailored to project needs. Additionally, they work closely with operations teams to integrate Jenkins with infrastructure tools and ensure reliable delivery to production environments. Effective communication and a collaborative mindset are key, as Jenkins Engineers often troubleshoot pipeline issues and implement best practices that benefit the entire software delivery lifecycle.

What is the difference between Jenkins Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectJenkins EngineerDevOps Engineer
CertificationsJenkins certifications, Linux, scriptingCloud, CI/CD, Linux, scripting, sometimes Jenkins
Work EnvironmentDev teams, CI/CD pipelines, automationDevelopment, operations, automation, cloud platforms
Industry UsageSoftware development, testing, deploymentSoftware, IT, cloud services, infrastructure

Jenkins Engineers focus primarily on designing, implementing, and maintaining Jenkins CI/CD pipelines, often with certifications in Jenkins and scripting. DevOps Engineers have a broader role, encompassing automation, infrastructure management, and cloud integration, often working with Jenkins as part of their toolkit. While Jenkins Engineers specialize in CI/CD processes, DevOps Engineers oversee the entire development-to-operations lifecycle, making their roles complementary but distinct.

Job description

A well-known medical device manufacturer is looking for a full-time Senior DevOps Engineer to join their embedded software development team. This is a direct hire opportunity with a company whose technology directly impacts patient outcomes, giving the work a level of purpose that is hard to find elsewhere. The environment is fast-moving and technically demanding, built around modern DevOps tooling and a culture that takes quality and compliance seriously.
This is not a role where you maintain what someone else built -- you will be the one making architectural decisions, leading pipeline migrations, and mentoring the engineers around you. If you thrive when given real ownership, enjoy working across teams, and get satisfaction from untangling complex technical problems, this position has a lot to offer. The company invests in its engineers and the scope of the work continues to grow. Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field -- equivalent professional experience is also considered
  • Strong hands-on experience with CI/CD pipeline design, implementation, and optimization
  • Proficiency with GitLab and Jenkins for pipeline and workflow management
  • Solid programming skills in C, Python, and Bash
  • Experience with DevOps tooling spanning infrastructure management, project tracking, logging, and compliance security scanning
  • Familiarity with Jira and JAMA for project and requirements management
  • Strong Linux, QNX, or Unix-like operating system experience
  • Proven ability to architect and implement software systems and deployment workflows at scale
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a project-driven environment
  • Experience in a regulated or compliance-driven industry is strongly preferred, particularly medical devices
Desired Skills & Experience
  • Background supporting embedded software development teams
  • Experience mentoring junior or mid-level engineers in a DevOps or software engineering context
  • Familiarity with a broad range of languages and frameworks beyond the core stack
  • Track record of identifying process gaps and driving improvements through to implementation
  • Comfort with rapidly adopting new tools and technologies as project needs evolve
What You Will Be Doing Tech Breakdown
  • CI/CD pipeline design and management using GitLab and Jenkins
  • Embedded software support and build system maintenance
  • Scripting and automation using Python, Bash, and C
  • Linux and Unix-based system administration
  • Compliance and security scanning tooling
Daily Responsibilities
  • 60% Hands on engineering -- pipeline work, automation, and tooling development
  • 20% Cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder engagement
  • 20% Mentorship, process improvement, and technical documentation
The Offer
  • Bonus eligible
You will receive the following benefits:
  • Medical Insurance
  • Dental Benefits
  • Vision Benefits
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • 401(k) with company match

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the US on a full-time basis now and in the future.
