What is a JD MLIS?

JD/MLIS professionals are individuals who have earned both a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree. They typically work at the intersection of law and information management, often in law libraries, academic institutions, or legal research roles. Their expertise allows them to manage legal information resources, support legal research, and ensure access to legal materials for attorneys, students, and the public. These professionals are skilled in both legal analysis and information organization, making them valuable assets in legal education and practice.

What do JD MLIS professionals do?

Individuals with both JD and MLIS degrees are often tasked with bridging the gap between legal expertise and library or information science. In practice, this means they might spend part of their time conducting in-depth legal research, supporting attorneys or faculty, and the rest managing legal resources, overseeing library operations, or implementing legal technology solutions. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and communication skills, as the role often involves collaborating closely with both legal teams and information professionals. This hybrid skill set is highly valued, especially in academic law libraries, large law firms, and government agencies.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a JD MLIS professional?

To thrive as a JD/MLIS professional, you need a strong background in legal research, information management, and librarianship, typically supported by both JD and MLIS degrees. Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw and LexisNexis), citation management tools, and digital library systems is essential. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you provide accurate legal information and guidance to patrons. These skills are crucial for ensuring clients and stakeholders have access to reliable legal resources and effective research support.

We invite candidates with at least four years of experience to apply. This is a full-time, hybrid position and is available immediately.
Under the general supervision of the Associate Law Librarian for Research Services, Research Services librarians provide high-quality legal and non-legal research assistance to law library users, including students, faculty, members of the local bar, and the general public. This includes providing classroom instruction in a variety of settings, ranging from for-credit instruction to one-off sessions; providing scholarship support for law faculty; interacting with a variety of patron groups while staffing the library's Reference Desk; and supporting and participating in outreach programs targeting both students and faculty.
Additional Responsibilities include:

  • Working with a variety of student groups - including faculty research assistants, journal students, international students, and law school graduate students - to assist with their library and legal research needs;
  • Supporting Emory Law's approximately 35 Tenure/Tenure-track faculty by participating in the Library's Faculty Services Program which supports faculty scholarship as well as some classroom assistance for seminar courses;
  • Creating and maintaining online research guides, bibliographies, and other materials that enhance access to legal information;
  • Serving on law library and university library committees;

  • Performing other associated duties as required.

Qualifications
Required:

  • Minimum of four years library experience including experience providing library reference (or other types of customer service experience) and conducting legal and non-legal research;
  • Strong communication skills; including a high comfort level interacting with colleagues and a wide range of library users;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently within a framework of assigned responsibilities, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with others.

Preferred:
  • Demonstrated success in teaching or public speaking; and
  • Desire to participate in professional law librarianship activities at regional and national levels.
