What are JD/MLIS professionals?

JD/MLIS professionals are individuals who have earned both a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree. They typically work at the intersection of law and information management, often in law libraries, academic institutions, or legal research roles. Their expertise allows them to manage legal information resources, support legal research, and ensure access to legal materials for attorneys, students, and the public. These professionals are skilled in both legal analysis and information organization, making them valuable assets in legal education and practice.

How do professionals with a JD/MLIS dual degree typically balance legal research and information management duties in their roles?

Individuals with both JD and MLIS degrees are often tasked with bridging the gap between legal expertise and library or information science. In practice, this means they might spend part of their time conducting in-depth legal research, supporting attorneys or faculty, and the rest managing legal resources, overseeing library operations, or implementing legal technology solutions. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and communication skills, as the role often involves collaborating closely with both legal teams and information professionals. This hybrid skill set is highly valued, especially in academic law libraries, large law firms, and government agencies.
