Java Contract information

What is a Java contract?

A Java contract job is a temporary position where a programmer is hired to work on projects using the Java programming language for a fixed period, rather than as a permanent employee. Contractors are often brought in to fill skill gaps, complete specific projects, or handle increased workloads. These roles can be full-time or part-time and typically last from a few months to over a year, depending on the project's needs. Contractors may work onsite or remotely and are usually paid hourly or by project milestone. Java contract jobs offer flexibility and the opportunity to work with a variety of companies and technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Java contract, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Java Contractor, you need strong proficiency in Java programming, experience with object-oriented design, and a solid understanding of software development methodologies, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like Oracle Certified Professional Java Programmer (OCPJP). Familiarity with development tools such as Eclipse or IntelliJ IDEA, version control systems like Git, and frameworks such as Spring or Hibernate is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, adaptability, and communication skills help you collaborate with diverse teams and quickly respond to project changes. These skills ensure high-quality, maintainable code and successful completion of contract-based software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by Java contracts and how can they be managed effectively?

Java contractors often work on short-term projects or fill skill gaps in development teams, which can present challenges such as quickly adapting to new codebases and varying team dynamics. To manage these effectively, it’s important to have strong communication skills, a proactive approach to understanding project requirements, and the ability to rapidly learn existing systems. Building rapport with permanent team members and maintaining thorough documentation can also help ease the transition. Staying current with Java frameworks and tools further ensures you can contribute value from day one.

What is the difference between Java Contract vs Java Developer?

AspectJava ContractJava Developer
CredentialsTypically requires Java certifications, experience in contract rolesRequires Java certifications, degree in computer science or related field
Work EnvironmentProject-based, short-term assignments, flexible hoursFull-time, ongoing employment, structured work hours
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for specific projects, consulting firmsEmployed directly by companies, tech firms, or agencies
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for contract opportunities, flexibilityCompared for full-time roles, career growth

Java Contract roles are typically project-based, offering short-term assignments with flexible schedules, ideal for those seeking variety or freelance work. Java Developers usually work full-time, with ongoing responsibilities and career development opportunities. Both roles require Java certifications and experience, but differ mainly in employment type and work environment.

• Location: 1200 Redstone Gateway SW, Huntsville, AL • Duration: long term, ongoing contract – we are a direct sub to the C2BMC program
• Clearance: Secret, will hold TS if you already have it • Program – C2BMC "C2BMC supports layered missile defense capabilities that enable an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It serves as a force multiplier by networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations, both globally and regionally, to improve performance. C2BMC is also essential for all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the current and future capabilities of missile defense systems. As a member of the Regional Applications (RA) Agile Release Train (ART) of the Missile Defense National Team for C2BMC (C2BMC NT), the SLD Algorithm Engineer Lead – TRK will be a key contributor to the design, development, integration, and leadership of Java-based mathematical algorithms in support of the C2BMC System Discrimination (SLD) mission area. Essential Functions:
• Lead the design and development of complex, Java-based mathematical algorithms for SLD, with an emphasis on tracking and discrimination to support C2BMC operational capabilities
• Develop and maintain algorithm-design artifacts, including architecture descriptions, design documentation, and technical presentations
• Implement MATLAB and/or Java-based software changes and prototypes, and support the transition of prototype algorithms to real-time tactical Java implementations
• Support and/or lead design and code reviews to ensure high-quality, maintainable, and testable software solutions
• Perform software testing, data analysis, and troubleshooting; identify root causes of system behavior issues and recommend effective solutions
• Support integration, testing, and verification of algorithm design and performance across lab, ground test, and flight test environments
• Present developed designs, analyses, and results to internal and external stakeholders, including program leadership and customer representatives
• Collaborate closely with Systems Engineering, Integration and Test, Deployment, and Warfighter Support teams to ensure mission success and alignment with operational requirements
• Actively participate in agile planning and execution using established C2BMC processes, including work decomposition, backlog refinement, and leadership in sprint ceremonies
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the continuous improvement of processes, tools, and technical approaches within RA ART Basic Qualifications:
Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field from an accredited university, along with 8 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with 6 years of relevant work experience; or 12 years of relevant work experience may be considered as an alternative to a degree
• Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
• Require 7+ years of experience in designing and developing complex mathematical algorithms related to data fusion, the transferable belief model, signal processing, sensor discrimination/classification, or Kalman filtering
• Proficient in full life-cycle development, algorithm creation, data fusion, and software implementation of mathematical algorithms
• Skilled in data analysis, whitepaper and concept development, and agile methodologies
• Experienced with MATLAB, Python, DevSecOps, systems integration, Unix/Linux, and radar signal processing
• Experience in analysis, testing, and verification of algorithm design and performance
• Experience developing algorithm prototypes and overseeing the transition to real-time tactical implementation
• Experience with strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to review system behavior issues, identify the root cause, and recommend a solution
