Child Care Assistant Teacher - Armstrong School

Start Date: September 1, 2026

Job Summary:ย 

The Childcare Assistant Teacher supports developmentally appropriate care, learning, supervision, and daily routines for children enrolled in St. James Community Childcare and Saved By The Bell. The position works collaboratively with the Lead Teacher to maintain a safe, welcoming, and well-organized program.

Supervisory Responsibilities:ย 

This position does not directly supervise employees unless specifically assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:ย 

Childcare & Learning Support

  • Assist with planned activities, learning centers, play, outdoor experiences, transitions, meals, rest, hygiene, and other daily routines.
  • Use positive guidance and relationship-based practices to support children's development, behavior, and belonging.
  • Observe and communicate relevant information about children's needs, progress, health, and behavior.
  • Prepare materials and maintain clean, safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate spaces.

Supervision & Program Support

  • Maintain active supervision and required staff-to-child ratios.
  • Follow attendance, release, health, sanitation, medication, incident, emergency, and confidentiality procedures.
  • Communicate respectfully with families and support consistent classroom routines and expectations.
  • Provide respectful, responsive, and student-centered service consistent with district procedures and assigned plans.
  • Build positive relationships with students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Maintain accurate records and protect confidential student, family, employee, and district information.
  • Use district-approved technology, communication systems, and safety procedures appropriately.
  • Participate in required meetings, training, supervision, and professional development.
  • Follow board policies, building procedures, ethical expectations, and applicable legal requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:ย 

  • Meets current Minnesota childcare-center qualifications for an assistant teacher in the assigned age group.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Ability to follow plans, maintain active supervision, use positive guidance, and work collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework or credential in early childhood education, child development, school-age care, education, or a related field.
  • Experience in a licensed childcare or school-age program.
  • Bilingual or multilingual communication skills.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain.
  • Required background study, orientation, health and safety, child-development, and annual training.

Work Environment:ย 

Work is performed in an active childcare and school-age setting with frequent movement, noise, close contact with children, cleaning products, bodily fluids, and indoor/outdoor activities.

Physical Job Requirements:ย 

  • Ability to lift and carry children or classroom materials up to approximately 40 pounds.
  • Ability to sit on the floor, bend, kneel, stand, walk, and actively supervise children indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to respond quickly and safely to children's needs and emergencies.
