Job Details Description

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for initiations, maintenance and monitoring of intravenous therapy as ordered by the Physician and in keeping with the policies of the T.J. Sampson Community Hospital. Serves as an educator/resource person in IV therapy for staff and physician.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
  • Must possess a current Kentucky Registered Nurse license.
  • Current BLS certification
  • Current ACLS certification

Minimum Work Experience

  • Three to five years recent clinical experience in a variety of clinical settings.

Required Skills

  • Has an acquired knowledge and skill in intravenous therapy and commitment to advancing practice of IV Therapy.
  • Demonstrates behavioral characteristics such as accountability, reliability, initiative sound judgment.
  • Must be able to follow directions and to perform work according to department standards when no directions are given.
  • Must be emotionally mature, able to prioritize tasks and able to function effectively under stress.

Essential Job Functions

  • Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities for self-growth and knowledge advancement in IV Therapy.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology, fluid and electrolyte balance, infection control, pharmacology and their technical and clinical applications as related to intravenous therapy.
  • Attends a CE or in-service program on emergency cardiac care at least once every three years.
  • Makes daily rounds on patients with vascular access device and inspects sites for signs of complications.
  • Changes IV tubing and restarts IV's according to policies and current Evidence Based Practice guidelines.
  • Inserts PICC (peripherally inserted central catheters) according to physicians orders and hospital policy.
  • Evaluates equipment and supplies related to IV Therapy.
  • Assists physicians with insertion of central lines.
  • Accesses implantable vascular devices as requested.
  • Assist in orientation of new employees.
  • Presents educational programs on IV Therapy to nursing staff and other health care personnel.
  • Administers chemotherapy and blood/blood products in a safe, appropriate manner according to policy.
  • Serves as a role model/resource person for all clinical personnel as relates to IV Therapy techniques and procedures.
  • Stocks and maintains supplies for IV Therapy.
  • Monitors centrally placed lines for complications and changes dressings according to policy.
  • Communicates effectively and in a professional manner with patients, physicians, nursing personnel and other departments.
  • Consistently informs floor supervisors and physicians of significant occurrences or problems and patients as relates to IV Therapy.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and/or CNO informed of significant occurrences.
  • The date, time, size, type of device and location are properly documented in patient's chart along with signature.
  • Tubing change is documented.
  • IV labels, tubing labels and site labels are used appropriately.
  • Consent forms are completed and properly signed when indicated for a procedure.
  • Attends nursing staff meetings.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Floats to other areas as assigned, responds to floating requests with a positive attitude.
  • Performs other duties as assigned with a positive attitude.
  • Completes competency assignments as evidenced by in-service record.
