Work Arrangement: This role follows a hybrid schedule and requires in-office presence in Columbus, Ohio two days per week.

The Consultant Technology Engineer in this role is the technical counterpart to a DEX product owner/manager. Their job is to make the user technology experiencemeasurable, reliable, automated, and continuously improving across devices, applications, identity, collaboration, and workplace services. This role sits at the intersection ofendpoint engineering + observability + automation + data analytics + user experience.

Work you will do:

  • Lead transition from operational availability to measuring if the technology is working for the users

  • Partner across orgs (IT Service Desk and PC Engineering) to align priorities and deliver outcomes that reduce incidents

  • Provide thought leadership and strategic direction for the Dex platform and capabilities

  • Clearly and effectively able to describe our Dex platform capabilities and strategy to all levels of leadership and across organizations

  • DEX platform engineering & administration - Implement, configure, integrate, and maintain DEX platforms

  • Experience monitoring - Measure device health, application performance, login/boot times, crashes, network quality, collaboration performance, and other indicators of employee friction.

  • Proactive issue detection - Identify degradation and recurring problemsbefore users open support tickets.

  • Automation & self-healing - Build scripts, workflows, and automated remediations for common issues such as application failures, configuration drift, disk capacity, services, certificates, or device performance.

  • Telemetry & data integration - Bring together endpoint, application, identity, network, ITSM, and user sentiment data to create an end-to-end picture of user experience.

  • DEX scoring & analytics - Develop experience scores, dashboards, KPIs, baselines, and segmentation to identify which user populations are experiencing friction and why.

  • Root-cause analysis - Correlate telemetry across devices, applications, infrastructure, and services to isolate the technical causes of poor experiences.

  • Endpoint experience optimization - Work closely with endpoint engineering on Windows/macOS configuration, patching, software distribution, device performance, and lifecycle improvements.

  • Application experience optimization - Analyze application responsiveness, crashes, launch times, authentication problems, and dependencies.

  • User sentiment - Combine technical telemetry with surveys and user feedback so that "healthy according to IT" doesn't automatically mean "good experience for the user."

  • ITSM integration - Connect DEX capabilities with platforms such as ServiceNow to enrich incidents, automate resolution, reduce ticket volumes, and improve service-desk diagnostics.

  • Change impact measurement - Measure the user impact of OS upgrades, application releases, configuration changes, migrations, and other technology changes.

  • Experience engineering - Translate recurring user pain points into technical improvements rather than simply resolving individual incidents.

  • Security & governance - Ensure telemetry collection, automation, and employee data are appropriately secured and privacy-conscious.

As a Technology Engineer, you'll deliver standard and custom supportable technology products. The solutions you build are based on Nationwide's architectural standards, technology roadmaps, industry trends, and business requirements. You'll focus on collaboration, data, systems, storage, middleware, network, security, and contact center technology products. You'll also be accountable for the operational aspects and management of these products according to the business requirements and defined service level agreements (SLAs).

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with Technology Architecture professionals to develop technology product roadmaps.

  • Responsible for applying secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.

  • Designs and implements standard builds and templates for all technology platforms.

  • Drives product improvements through optimization, enhancements and the implementation of new features and functions.

  • Works continuously with other Technology Engineering teams and Technology Architecture to ensure the success of products.

  • Conducts proof-of-concept labs for enhancements, new solutions, and competitive bake-offs and/or comparative evaluations.

  • Designs standard and custom technology solutions for business partner projects, including pre-production testing, performance tuning, handoffs and certification.

  • Conducts proactive and reactive monitoring to detect, predict and resolve abnormal conditions in the environment.

  • Collaborates with vendors to help drive design innovation in product enhancements and improvements.

  • Executes production engineering processes, including incident management, root cause analysis, problem management, change management, release management, and knowledge management.

  • Provides complex production support for all technology platforms.

  • Provides oversight for technical labs and development environments.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Engineering Manager or Technology Product Manager.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education:
Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems or a related field are preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: Technology certifications or designations are not required, but encouraged (i.e., AWS, Azure, scripting and development languages, delivery methods, security).
Experience: Six years or more of experience with the most complex integrated solutions with an ability to design and develop and modify new and existing solutions for specialized needs. Experience with multiple technologies across one or more domains, including automating deployment of solution configurations, working with IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, and packaged solutions, and training and guiding less experienced associates.


Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strong communication skills, knowledge of planning, management and execution of Accelerated Solutions Delivery framework, Information Security acumen. Ability to influence, negotiate, and set priorities are needed. Insurance or financial services industry knowledge a plus.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
