What are some common challenges ITI Engineers face when transitioning from training to a professional work environment?

ITI Engineers often find the transition from academic or vocational training to a real-world job setting challenging due to differences in equipment, work pace, and expectations. In the workplace, they may need to quickly adapt to specific company processes, multitask across various technical responsibilities, and communicate effectively with teams from different departments. Additionally, troubleshooting real-time issues and adhering to safety protocols under pressure can be demanding. However, with mentorship and proactive learning, most ITI Engineers overcome these challenges and grow into more confident professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ITI Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ITI Engineer, you need a solid technical foundation in your chosen trade (such as electrician, fitter, or mechanic), typically supported by an ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certification. Familiarity with industrial equipment, safety protocols, and basic computer applications is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills that enhance job performance. These skills ensure the efficient, safe, and reliable operation of machinery and systems in industrial settings.

The candidate in this role will work with contractors, US military, government civilians and system operators to support mission-critical ITI software development by translating Solutions Engineering Documents (SEDs) into actionable Program Engineering Documents (PEDs), ensuring the resulting software-level solution is clearly defined, directly traceable to initial requirements, and technically executable. Your day-to-day work will include:

  • Working as a member of the Software Systems Engineering team to develop program-level features utilizing a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach that describe MEI and CSCI behavior, performance and acceptance criteria necessary to guide software implementation, utilizing Jira and Confluence to document tasks/issues within an Agile workflow
  • Assembling artifacts and other information into Program Engineering Documents (PEDs)
  • Facilitating/Leading both Internal and Formal Reviews of assigned features as well as adjudication/resolution of comments made against features
  • Participating in regularly scheduled team stand-ups as well as Team Planning, Retrospectives, and Prioritization
  • Other duties as assigned

At a minimum you should have:

  • An active SECRET security clearance and the ability to maintain.
  • A bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
  • 3 to 10 years of systems engineering or related experience.
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
  • Proficiency in MagicDraw
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office toolset
  • Experience with Jira and Confluence
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to effectively interface with various levels of workers/leaders
  • Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative team environment

You will be highly desirable if you have:

  • A master's degree in systems engineering.
  • Previous experience with the Army Air and Missile Defense Command and Control systems, such as Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS), Patriot, FAAD C2, and ADAM
  • Previous experience with the integration of Command and Control Systems in a System of Systems architecture

*All employees may be called upon to provide their knowledge and/or expertise to proposal efforts including contract re-competes.

**This job description is subject to change at any time.
