What is an Italian nanny?

An Italian Nanny is a childcare provider who offers care, supervision, and educational support to children, often incorporating the Italian language and culture into daily activities. Their responsibilities may include preparing meals, helping with homework, organizing activities, and ensuring the child’s well-being. Many Italian Nannies are fluent in Italian and may teach the language through conversation and play. They can work full-time, part-time, or live-in depending on the family’s needs.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an Italian nanny?

An Italian Nanny typically manages daily routines such as preparing meals, organizing age-appropriate activities, and supporting children's language development in both Italian and the family's primary language. Duties may also include helping with homework, facilitating playdates, and accompanying children to extracurricular commitments. Communication with parents about the child's progress and well-being is a key part of the role. The work environment can vary from live-in to live-out arrangements, and collaboration with other household staff or teachers may be required depending on the family's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Italian nanny?

To thrive as an Italian Nanny, you need experience in childcare, fluency in both Italian and the family's native language, and a solid understanding of child development. Certifications in first aid and CPR are often required, and familiarity with communication tools for regular updates is valuable. Patience, cultural sensitivity, and strong organizational skills help nannies excel in building trust with both children and parents. These skills ensure a safe, nurturing, and bilingual environment tailored to each family's needs.

Job description

A private family in Atherton is seeking an exceptional full-time, live-out night nanny to join their fully staffed household. This long-term opportunity is ideal for a highly experienced childcare professional who is nurturing, polished, flexible, and passionate about child development. The ideal candidate will be Montessori trained, fluent in English and at least one additional language (Spanish, French, Italian, or German - all languages spoken in the home), and bring either/or professional childcare expertise or personal parenting experience, if applicable. The nanny will care for two homeschooled children, ages 3 and 9, while working collaboratively with the family's existing childcare team, which includes two other nannies. This is a fully staffed household, and the schedule will likley be 6pm-6am or 7pm-7am.

This role will be a combination of both sleep and awake care, e.g. candidates will be responsible for getting bottles and diaper bags ready for the next day, as well as light tidying up, though the priority would be to keep the youngest comapny while they sleep.

This position is best suited for an experienced career nanny who values education, structure, language immersion, and child development. The family places a strong emphasis on Montessori philosophy and multilingual learning, making these qualifications essential to the role.

  • Provide engaging, attentive, and developmentally appropriate care
  • Support the children's homeschool routine and daily learning
  • Incorporate Montessori principles into daily activities and interactions, where relevant
  • Foster language development through consistent communication in an approved language
  • Plan enriching educational, creative, and age-appropriate activities
  • Maintain routines that encourage independence, confidence, and curiosity
  • Collaborate effectively with parents and household staff
  • Travel with the family as needed
  • Assist with child-related organization and maintain tidy children's spaces

Ideal Candidate:

  • Montessori certification or formal Montessori training is required
  • Fluent English is required
  • Must also be fluent in at least one of the following languages:
    • Spanish
    • French
    • Italian
    • German
  • Experience supporting homeschooled children is strongly preferred
  • Warm, professional, discreet, and emotionally intelligent
  • Highly flexible with scheduling
  • Comfortable working within a fully staffed household
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record (driving is required, although transporting the children anywhere is not expected)

Household:

  • Atherton-based residence
  • Two small dogs
  • Fully staffed home with:
    • Chief of Staff
    • Estate Manager
    • House Manager
    • Chef
    • Three Housekeepers
    • Two additional nannies (night coverage)

  • $50+/hour, depending on experience
  • Flexibility for exceptional candidates
  • Medical insurance with 70% employer-paid premium
  • Optional dental and vision coverage available at employee expense
  • 401(k) plan available (no employer match)
  • Two weeks of paid time off
  • Federal holidays
  • Generous discretionary bonus opportunity
