What is an IT Test Manager?

IT Test Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the testing phase of software development or IT projects. They plan, coordinate, and manage testing activities to ensure software products meet quality standards before release. Their duties include creating test strategies, managing testing teams, allocating resources, and communicating results to stakeholders. IT Test Managers also ensure that any defects are identified and resolved efficiently, helping to deliver reliable technology solutions.

How does an IT Test Manager typically collaborate with development and QA teams during a software project?

An IT Test Manager plays a key role in fostering communication between development and QA teams throughout the software development lifecycle. They coordinate test planning, ensure that testing requirements align with project goals, and facilitate regular meetings to address issues or changes. By acting as a bridge, the Test Manager helps resolve defects quickly, keeps everyone updated on testing progress, and ensures that both teams work towards delivering a high-quality product on schedule. This collaborative approach helps minimize miscommunication and supports a smoother release process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT Test Manager, and why are they important?

To excel as an IT Test Manager, you need a strong background in software testing methodologies, quality assurance processes, and a relevant degree or certification such as ISTQB. Familiarity with test management tools like JIRA, HP ALM, and automation frameworks is typically required. Outstanding leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills are vital for managing teams and coordinating with stakeholders. These skills ensure testing is thorough, timely, and aligned with business goals, ultimately delivering reliable software products.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Test Manager based in Netherlands.

This is a senior testing leadership opportunity within a fast-growing, international digital environment spanning insurance, e-commerce, and device protection. You will lead testing activities across a major technical delivery programme involving multiple projects, teams, and external partners. The role combines strategic ownership with hands-on QA leadership, giving you significant influence over quality standards and delivery outcomes. You will oversee the complete testing lifecycle across SIT, UAT, and ORT, while working across both Agile and Waterfall environments. As a testing SME, you will define methodologies, mentor teams, manage risks, and ensure robust quality gates. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced QA leader who enjoys complexity, collaboration, and driving continuous improvement.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead and coordinate testing activities across multiple concurrent projects, delivery streams, internal teams, and external partners.
  • Own the end-to-end testing lifecycle, from test planning and scenario development through execution, defect management, reporting, and test closure.
  • Define and maintain testing strategies, plans, goals, closure reports, and other key testing artefacts.
  • Manage and oversee SIT, UAT, and ORT activities, ensuring appropriate quality gates are achieved at each stage.
  • Collaborate closely with QA Leads, engineers, project managers, business stakeholders, and third-party vendors to align testing activities with programme objectives.
  • Act as a testing Subject Matter Expert, providing guidance on testing methodology, risk management, test design, and phase-specific approaches.
  • Support resource management and step into hands-on QA responsibilities when required.
  • Drive improvements to testing processes, tools, and practices using lessons learned, retrospectives, and industry best practices.
  • Monitor testing progress, risks, issues, dependencies, and, where applicable, costs, providing clear status reporting to stakeholders.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing and leading QA or testing teams on large-scale, end-to-end technology projects.
  • Demonstrated experience across the full Software Testing Life Cycle (STLC), including SIT, UAT, and ORT.
  • Previous hands-on experience as a QA Lead, Test Lead, or QA Engineer, with the ability to contribute technically when required.
  • Strong experience coordinating multi-stream teams, external partners, and third-party vendors.
  • Extensive practical knowledge of JIRA and Confluence for project tracking, documentation, and test management.
  • Experience with test automation and at least one recognised industry-standard automation framework.
  • Strong capabilities in test planning, test case and scenario development, defect management, test data management, and quality reporting.
  • Comfortable working across both Agile methodologies, including Scrum or Kanban, and Waterfall delivery models.
  • Experience working with sensitive customer data and an understanding of relevant testing and data-handling considerations.
  • Good knowledge of testing methodology, insurance/device protection, or e-commerce; experience in insurtech, fintech, or regulated digital platforms is an advantage.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and validate business and application requirements within complex digital environments.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Full professional fluency in English and Spanish, both written and spoken.
  • Experience with AI, API, or RPA technologies, introducing testing tools, or working within a testing Centre of Excellence is a plus.
Benefits:
  • Remote working opportunity within Europe.
  • Senior-level position with significant ownership and visibility across a major international technology programme.
  • Opportunity to work across insurance, e-commerce, device protection, and other regulated digital environments.
  • High-impact role combining strategic testing leadership with hands-on technical involvement.
  • International and cross-functional working environment with exposure to internal teams, external partners, and third-party vendors.
  • Opportunity to shape testing methodologies, introduce tools, and drive continuous improvement across QA practices.
  • Professional growth through exposure to large-scale digital transformation and multiple delivery methodologies.
  • Collaborative environment with opportunities to act as a recognised testing Subject Matter Expert.
