About the Role

Argonne National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center where talented scientists and engineers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity. Within Argonne is the Advanced Photon Source (APS), a large user facility operated for the Department of Energy that provides ultraโ€‘bright, highโ€‘energy Xโ€‘ray beams for research in nearly all scientific disciplines. The Advanced Photon Source Engineering Support Division (AES) seeks an experienced Information Technology Group Leader to lead the delivery of missionโ€‘critical digital infrastructure supporting one of the worldโ€™s premier xโ€‘ray user facilities. The IT Group Leader provides strategic and operational leadership across highโ€‘performance computing (HPC), networking, Linux scientific platforms, and Windows enterprise services, enabling accelerator operations, beamline experiments, scientific and engineering data workflows, and enterprise collaboration environments. This position plays a key role in advancing the Photon Sciences Directorateโ€™s (PSC) computing capabilities to support the APS facility and initiatives, including highโ€‘throughput detector data pipelines, AIโ€‘enabled scientific workflows, and digitalโ€‘twinโ€“supported facility operations.

Responsibilities
  • Managing the IT group that plans, designs, develops, supports, integrates, implements, and/or operates enterpriseโ€‘wide computer systems and networks, including highโ€‘performance systems and networks, and associated software and security technologies.
  • Implementing policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure efficient, economical, and effective IT planning, acquisition, and management in support of APS mission and objectives.
  • Collaborating on the development of a strategy for the digitization of APS IT infrastructure supporting accelerator, beamline, and scientific computing environments.
  • Working with Laboratory Information Technology andArgonne Cyber Security Office to ensure APS systems operate within the standards and requirements of Laboratory and DOE/DHS security.
  • Acting as the Chief Information Officer for the APS and responding to and furthering the goals set by APS management.
  • Managing the career growth and development of staff through appropriate mentoring and careerโ€‘progression frameworks.
  • Analyzing IT infrastructure costs and developing effort and budget estimates for projects.
  • Submitting annual operational budgets and staffing estimates for the IT group.
  • Developing and implementing business continuity protocols to minimize disruption to operations in the event of emergencies or data loss.
  • Overseeing physical security of all hardware systems, networks, and server infrastructure at APS.
  • Promoting effective interโ€‘divisional IT operations by encouraging performanceโ€‘based management and, where appropriate, facilitating the restructuring of missionโ€‘related processes before significant IT investments.
  • Establishing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive cyber/computer security program to protect APS information and IT assets.
  • Overseeing all external connections to the APS network, including web services, file transfer, HPC, and telepresence.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with external IT vendors and service providers.
  • Identifying emerging technologies and industry standards to be analyzed and integrated within the IT organization.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelorโ€™s or masterโ€™s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a comparable field.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of professional experience managing technology or engineering projects and staff in complex, stateโ€‘ofโ€‘theโ€‘art scientific or technical facilities.
  • Experience in highโ€‘performance computing, AI infrastructure operations, cybersecurity engineering, data pipeline orchestration, AIOps, and computer networking hardware.
  • Experience establishing and delivering reliability metrics within IT operations.
  • Experience with highโ€‘performance digital platforms supporting AIโ€‘enabled science, digital twins, and largeโ€‘scale scientific data pipelines.
  • Experience with container platforms, infrastructure automation, and configurationโ€‘managed infrastructure environments.
  • Knowledge of and skill in managing and presenting budgets and project schedules for large computer and network systems.
  • Proven track record as a project manager in multimillionโ€‘dollar computer software, database, hardware, and network projects.
  • Ability to model Argonneโ€™s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and ability to interact with all organizational levels.
Compensation

The expected hiring range for this position is $135,458.00 โ€“ $211,313.70. The pay offered will be determined based on factors such as scope, responsibilities, qualifications, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs. Comprehensive benefits are part of the total rewards package.
