What does an IT Developer Intern do?

An IT Developer Intern assists development teams by writing, testing, and debugging code, as well as helping with the design and implementation of software solutions. They often work under the supervision of experienced developers, learning important skills in programming, project management, and software development lifecycle practices. The role typically involves collaborating with other team members, contributing to documentation, and participating in meetings to understand project requirements. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience for students or recent graduates looking to start a career in IT development.

What types of projects can an IT Developer Intern expect to work on, and how much autonomy is typically given?

As an IT Developer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as application development, bug fixing, testing, or assisting with new feature implementation under the guidance of senior developers. Interns usually start with smaller tasks or modules, gradually taking on more complex responsibilities as they gain confidence and demonstrate proficiency. While you'll receive mentorship and regular feedback, there's often room for independent problem-solving and contributing ideas, especially in agile teams. This collaborative environment helps interns build technical skills and gain practical experience in real-world software development settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT Developer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IT Developer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like Java, Python, or C#, as well as foundational knowledge in computer science principles. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes basic cloud platforms or database tools is often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns collaborate with teams and adapt to new challenges. These skills and qualities are important as they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, learn quickly, and grow within dynamic technical environments.

Job description

Everyday Coffee IT Systems & AI Engineering Intern

Location: Austin, TX

Work directly with the CEO at a fast-growing national restaurant franchisee to build and maintain the systems that run our stores and support our restaurant leaders across the country. You'll get hands-on experience with Microsoft 365 tenant administration and help us build out our AI capabilities used by our operations team.

About the Role

The IT Systems & AI Engineering Intern supports the day-to-day technology needs of field employees and restaurant teams by managing the IT support inbox, triaging incoming requests, troubleshooting technical issues, and coordinating timely resolutions. This position will also support our team's new process and systems development and our AI initiatives.

WhatYou'llDo

  • Support AI and technology projects that improve employee experience and operational efficiency, while identifying opportunities to automate repetitive tasks, streamline workflows, and improve business processes.
  • Manage the IT support infrastructure, monitoring incoming support requests, prioritizing issues, responding promptly, and escalating items when needed.
  • Provide frontline technical support to field employees and restaurant teams, helping troubleshoot system, device, access, login, software, hardware, and connectivity issues.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, vendors, and service providers to resolve technical issues and ensure timely follow-through on open items.
  • Assist with systems administration tasks such as user setup, access updates, device coordination, new location technology setup, and internal database maintenance.
  • Create guides, FAQs, training materials, and internal communications that help field employees use company systems effectively.
  • Identify recurring support trends, workflow gaps, and process inefficiencies, then suggest practical improvements to reduce friction for field teams.

WhatWe'reLooking For

  • Tech-savvy, service-oriented, and comfortable supporting employees with varying levels of technical experience.
  • Experience working with Microsoft 365 tenant. Help desk tools, ticketing systems, POS systems, or project management platforms is a plus.
  • Familiarity with AI LLMs, agentic AI and workflow automation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot, research solutions, and communicate next steps clearly.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple support requests, follow up consistently, and document work accurately.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and learning agility, with a desire to continuously explore new technologies, AI tools, and more efficient ways of working.
  • Ability to adapt quickly, work independently, and stay calm while supporting urgent field issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially when explaining technical information in simple, practical terms.
  • Proactive mindset with a strong sense of ownership; comfortable taking initiative, navigating ambiguity, and contributing beyond defined responsibilities in a startup environment.

Why Join Us?

  • Front-row seat to every technology pain point in our company. Managing support means you'll be the first to see what's breaking for restaurant teams day to day - and instead of just closing a ticket, you'll help design the fix that stops it from happening again.
  • You'll build things people use, fast. Your automations and AI tools go live for real restaurant managers within days or weeks, not stuck in a backlog - you'll see the before/after impact directly.
  • You'll have direct exposure to the CEO and management team to help them build the technology needed to grow by 10x of over the next 5 years.
