It Developer Intern information

What does an IT Developer Intern do?

An IT Developer Intern assists development teams by writing, testing, and debugging code, as well as helping with the design and implementation of software solutions. They often work under the supervision of experienced developers, learning important skills in programming, project management, and software development lifecycle practices. The role typically involves collaborating with other team members, contributing to documentation, and participating in meetings to understand project requirements. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience for students or recent graduates looking to start a career in IT development.

What types of projects can an IT Developer Intern expect to work on, and how much autonomy is typically given?

As an IT Developer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as application development, bug fixing, testing, or assisting with new feature implementation under the guidance of senior developers. Interns usually start with smaller tasks or modules, gradually taking on more complex responsibilities as they gain confidence and demonstrate proficiency. While you'll receive mentorship and regular feedback, there's often room for independent problem-solving and contributing ideas, especially in agile teams. This collaborative environment helps interns build technical skills and gain practical experience in real-world software development settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IT Developer Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an IT Developer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like Java, Python, or C#, as well as foundational knowledge in computer science principles. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes basic cloud platforms or database tools is often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns collaborate with teams and adapt to new challenges. These skills and qualities are important as they enable interns to contribute meaningfully to projects, learn quickly, and grow within dynamic technical environments.

Triage Engineer - IT

Talent Solutions

Job description

About JMA Consulting

JMA Consulting is a boutique, security-first managed services provider based in Chicago. We support a select group of clients with white-glove IT and cybersecurity services, combining the personal attention of a small firm with the standards of a much larger one. We believe technology is fundamentally about people, and we hire that belief. We grow deliberately, we turn away work that is not a good fit, and we invest in the people who join us.

About the Role

The Triage Engineer is the first point of contact for our clients' support requests and the person who prepares and deploys the technology those clients rely on. The role has two core functions.

The first is triage. You review every incoming support request, understand what the client needs and why it matters to their business, and make sure the request reaches the right engineer quickly, with a warm and professional acknowledgment that tells the client a real person is already on it.

The second is device deployment. You build and configure the new computers our clients' employees use, receive and process hardware as it arrives, and manage equipment securely through its full lifecycle.

This is a front-line role and a genuine entry point into a technology career. We will teach you technical crafts. What we are looking for first is someone who is exceptional with people.

What You Will Do

Triage and Client Service

•       Serve as the first point of contact for incoming client support requests.

•       Review each request, determine its nature and its impact on the client's business, and direct it to the right engineer.

•       Provide prompt personal acknowledgment on every request so the client knows their issue has been seen and is being acted on.

•       Set clear expectations for next steps and response times.

•       Keep requests moving and raise a question quickly rather than letting a request wait when the right path is unclear.

•       Document your work accurately and completely.

Device Deployment and Asset Management

•       Build and configure new workstations and laptops to company standards, including operating system setup, Microsoft 365 enrollment, security software, and monitoring tools.

•       Verify that every device is fully configured and protected before it leaves our hands.

•       Receive, inspect, and inventory incoming hardware.

•       Prepare outbound devices for shipment and coordinate handoffs with our shipping carrier and local courier service.

•       Process returned equipment, including secure data wiping to company standards.

•       Maintain accurate records of devices throughout their lifecycle.

Triage and device deployment are the two anchors of the role. You will be the primary person responsible for both, working within a supportive team that shares coverage, so the work stays on track.

What We Are Looking For

NOTE: The most important quality for this role is a natural gift for customer service. We can teach technical skills to anyone with genuine interest and a willingness to learn. Warmth, patience, and true ownership of a client's problem are far harder to teach, and they are what we hire for. If you are outstanding with people and eager to build a technology career, we want to hear from you.

Required

•       A genuine talent for customer service: warmth, patience under pressure, and ownership of a client's problem from first contact through to resolution.

•       Clear, professional written and verbal communication.

•       Strong organizational habits and consistent follow-through.

•       Sound judgment and comfort deciding with incomplete information.

•       Careful, accurate record-keeping.

•       A genuine interest in learning the technical side of IT.

•       The ability to lift and move computer equipment.

•       Reliable, on-site availability Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Nice to Have

•       Prior customer-facing service experience in any field where care and follow-through mattered.

•       Familiarity with Windows, Microsoft 365, and general computer troubleshooting.

•       Prior help desk, dispatch, or IT support experience.

•       Hands-on experience building or configuring computers.

•       Exposure to IT service management practices.

Why This Role

This is a real position and the front door to a career in technology at JMA. You will see the full range of what we do, work directly with our clients from their very first contact, and build the foundation that leads to our engineering track. We hire for character and potential, and we develop the rest.
