What is an ISO manager?

An ISO Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards within an organization. Their primary duties include ensuring compliance with relevant ISO standards, conducting internal audits, and leading the process for certification or recertification. ISO Managers work to improve organizational processes, train staff on quality management systems, and liaise with external auditors. They play a crucial role in helping organizations achieve and maintain high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ISO manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ISO Manager, you need in-depth knowledge of ISO standards (such as ISO 9001, 14001, or 27001), quality management principles, and relevant industry regulations, usually backed by a degree in a related field and ISO Lead Auditor certification. Familiarity with audit management tools, document control systems, and compliance software is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in leading teams, facilitating audits, and driving continuous improvement. These skills ensure robust compliance, foster a culture of quality, and help organizations maintain certifications critical for credibility and operational excellence.

What are some common challenges faced by ISO managers when implementing new quality management systems, and how can they be overcome?

ISO Managers often encounter resistance to change from staff when introducing new quality management systems, as well as difficulties in aligning existing processes with ISO standards. To overcome these challenges, it's important to foster open communication, provide thorough training, and involve team members early in the process. Additionally, collaborating closely with department heads helps ensure that each area understands the benefits and requirements of compliance, making the transition smoother and more sustainable.

Essential Duties
  • Serve as the internal program owner for ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 implementation and certification across Kansas and Nevada manufacturing sites.
  • Translate fit-gap findings into prioritized site-level action plans and coordinate consultant deliverables for system design, implementation, and certification readiness.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve EMS/OHSMS documentation, including manuals, environmental aspects registers, HIRA registers, legal and other requirements registers, operational controls, emergency preparedness procedures, monitoring and measurement processes, internal audits, and management reviews.
  • Coordinate certification body selection, contracting, Stage 1 / Stage 2 audit logistics, annual surveillance audits, and recertification activities.
  • Establish cross-site governance such as an ISO Steering Committee, monthly EHS coordination, risk tracking, escalation paths, status reporting, and executive briefings.
  • Lead internal audit planning, auditor qualification, cross-site audit participation, nonconformity closure, corrective actions, and ongoing PDCA-based continuous improvement.
  • Maintain technical understanding of ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, forthcoming revisions, and related transition planning; support integration with ISO 9001 where appropriate.
  • Coordinate with EHS, Operations, Engineering, Facilities, HR, Procurement, Quality, RBA, and corporate stakeholders to embed ISO requirements into site operations.
  • Support alignment with parallel RBA VAP activities and reuse documents, training, and audit evidence where requirements overlap, particularly health & safety and environmental requirements.
  • Track KPIs, audit findings, training completion, document control status, legal compliance status, and program milestones; prepare monthly and quarterly reports for leadership.
  • Manage program budget inputs including consultant fees, certification body costs, training, audit travel, software/tools, and internal program costs.
  • Evaluate and support appropriate digital tools or dashboards to improve management system monitoring, compliance workflows, and reporting.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • No direct reports initially; however, the role will require matrixed coordination of site-based EHS, RBA, and operational stakeholders. Future expansion may be possible as the program matures.
Travel Requirement
  • Approximately 30–40% domestic travel between Kansas and Nevada sites is expected, with higher intensity during gap assessment, system rollout, and certification audit phases.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements
  • To ensure the health and safety in the workplace and for the protection of our employees, wearing PPE is a possibility and may include equipment such as a full Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, bump cap, and a full hazmat suit that includes a respirator.
