Job description

The Role: Performs irrigation and preirrigation tasks for vegetable and summer crops, including laying and repairing pipes and drip tape, monitoring water flow and booster pumps, inspecting irrigated areas to prevent waste, and ensuring all equipment is handled safely and maintained properly.

Location(s): Salinas, CA

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Performs irrigation operations for vegetable crops and various summer crops.
  • Performs pre-irrigation operations to lay irrigation pipes or drip tape for planting. germination irrigation, and drip tape irrigation.
  • Ensures that proper safety measures are utilized in the handling of irrigation equipment.
  • Inspect the area irrigated to ensure adequate soaking and to prevent water waste.
  • Waits for a signal from the foreperson to start the water flow.
  • Monitors water applications to ensure that specifications are met.
  • Responsible for the repair of irrigation pipes, drip tape, and recovery of pipe and tape.
  • Cleans and repairs ditches, irrigation pipes and valves, drip tape, and any other equipment associated with irrigation.
  • Monitors booster pumps to ensure proper water flow and force.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience: Requires a high school diploma (or GED) and one to two years of irrigation experience.
  • Language Skills: Able to read and write simple instructions and communicate effectively in small group or oneonone settings.
  • Mathematical Skills: Able to perform basic arithmetic with twodigit numbers and work with standard units of money, weight, volume, and distance.
  • Reasoning Ability: Able to follow detailed but straightforward instructions and solve simple problems with limited variables.

  • Physical Demands: Requires regular standing and walking, frequent use of hands and climbing, occasional lifting up to 100 lbs, and the ability to perform tasks requiring close and distance vision.
