SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under supervision, performs maintenance and landscaping work on District grounds, athletic fields and outside facilities. Incumbent performs related work as required.
The incumbent may be assigned to any early morning, morning, day or evening shift.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Groundskeeper - Middle School classification differs from the Groundskeeper I classification in that the former performs landscape work that is less difficult and complex in nature.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Plants, mows, trims, weeds, fertilizes and irrigate lawns, flower beds and fields; cuts and lays sod; trims shrubs, hedges and trees; sprays flowers and shrubs with insecticides; sweeps, hoses down or removes snow from walkways, drives, parking areas and bleachers; rakes or vacuums leaves; and does general ground cleaning by gathering trash and debris.
Cleans and repairs or replaces sprinkler heads; assists in installing or repairing sprinkler systems; repairs fences, paints traffic and parking marks on curbs, drives and parking lots.
The incumbent may be called upon on off-hours for school emergencies, such as burglaries, vandalism, fires, snow removal, equipment failures, flooding, etc.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  1. Six (6) months of landscaping or ground keeping experience.

Knowledge of: Integrated Pest Management strategies and laws, basic gardening, pruning and landscaping methods and materials; use of gardening tools, machinery and equipment; and lawn irrigation systems.
Skill at: Working independently; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; performing heavy manual labor under adverse conditions; working from blueprints; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Nevada driver license, with a driving record acceptable to the District.
Physical Demands: This work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as frequently climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 60 pounds, pushing balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or reaching, crawling in restricted areas. . Must have the ability to enter all areas of a facility including attics and crawl spaces. To some extent, the frequency or intensity of physical exertion must also be considered.
Special Considerations: At the following schools (Damonte Ranch HS, Reed HS, Reno HS, Shaw MS, Depoali MS, Double Diamond ES, Spanish Springs HS, Sky Ranch MS, Herz MS, Bohach ES, Sepulveda ES, Hall ES, and Poulakidas), reclaimed/effluent water is used, which requires that specific safety procedures be observed. Employees assigned to these facilities are required to remain current on the following vaccinations: Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Tetanus. New employees hired into this classification, who will work at any of these locations, are required to complete all vaccinations within 30 days of employment.
When assigned at a new school under construction for the first school year, in addition to and along with the above, must possess the following:
Knowledge of: Scheduling, receiving, unloading truckloads of product; translate and document information on packing slips, relaying information of received products and missing product to Capital Projects; organize and stage product.

CUSTODIAN
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under supervision, keeps assigned building area clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly; secures rooms and cleaning stations; does special cleaning. May perform minor maintenance and painting duties. Incumbent performs related duties as required.
During school year, positions may be assigned to early morning, morning, afternoon, evening or night shifts.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, shampoos, and waxes floors, including surfaces of many types; vacuums and cleans rugs and carpets; dusts, waxes, washes and polishes furniture and woodwork, fixtures, shelves, cupboards and counters; cleans walls and blackboards; cleans and sanitize restrooms, locker rooms and showers; fills soap and paper dispenser; washes windows; empties trash and waste cans; and restocks supplies.
Moves furniture and equipment and sets up rooms and auditoriums for special meetings and activities. May set up and open areas for special events. Insures all doors and windows in assigned area are locked, alarms set, and necessary security lights are on.
Performs minor maintenance such as replacing lights, painting small rooms or trim, removing and/or tagging broken furniture; reports vandalism and items needing repair. May perform outside maintenance, such as snow removal, mowing, weeding, irrigating, picking up litter, etc.
Participates in intensive cleaning and restoration of District buildings during summer vacations and other periods; washes, removes and stacks furniture; washes walls and woodwork; paints interior and exterior walls; strips floors using power equipment; and seals and waxes floors.
May be called upon on off-hours for school emergencies, such as burglaries, vandalism, snow removal, equipment failures, fires, flooding, etc.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting.
