What is an IP transport engineer?

An IP Transport Engineer is a network professional responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the infrastructure that carries Internet Protocol (IP) data across networks. They focus on the underlying transport technologies such as MPLS, Ethernet, fiber optics, and various routing protocols to ensure efficient and reliable data transmission. Their role often involves troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and ensuring network scalability to support growing data demands. These engineers work closely with other IT professionals to support the overall health and security of an organization's network.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an IP transport engineer?

To thrive as an IP Transport Engineer, you need a solid understanding of IP networking, routing protocols, and transport technologies, usually backed by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with network management tools, routers, switches, and certifications like Cisco CCNP or Juniper JNCIP is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you excel in diagnosing and resolving complex network issues. These skills are essential to ensure reliable, high-performance data transmission and to maintain robust network infrastructure.

What are some common challenges faced by IP transport engineers when managing large-scale network deployments?

IP Transport Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring network scalability, maintaining low latency, and troubleshooting complex connectivity issues across diverse platforms. Managing hardware and software upgrades without service disruption requires careful planning and coordination with cross-functional teams. Additionally, staying current with emerging technologies and industry standards is essential to optimize network performance and security.

Job Summary

As a Level 3 IP Engineer, you will play a vital role in the design, implementation, and support of scalable IP transport networks. This position requires a deep understanding of routing protocols, network performance, and service availability across enterprise and carrier-grade environments. You will be responsible for resolving complex issues, leading optimization efforts, and driving automation and documentation practices to ensure reliable and secure operations.
This role is ideal for experienced engineers ready to take ownership of critical infrastructure and collaborate with architecture, operations, and NOC teams to ensure end-to-end network performance and reliability.

Responsibilities
  • Design and validate Layer 3 network topologies, addressing schemes, and route policies.
  • Lead troubleshooting of routing issues involving BGP, OSPF, MPLS, and multicast.
  • Monitor network health using telemetry, SNMP, and flow-based tools; respond to anomalies.
  • Implement change requests, maintenance windows, and upgrades with minimal service impact.
  • Automate recurring network tasks (e.g., provisioning, config backups, audits) using Python, Ansible, or other tools.
  • Collaborate with IP architects and security teams to align on policies, segmentation, and access control.
  • Participate in capacity planning, traffic analysis, and latency optimization efforts.
  • Maintain technical documentation, network diagrams, and SOPs for internal use.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal knowledge sharing.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to support network integration for new services or infrastructure rollouts.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 6+ years of experience in IP networking and infrastructure support, with at least 4 years in reliability-focused roles.

Technical Expertise

  • Expert-level knowledge of routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, IS-IS) and transport protocols (TCP, UDP, ICMP).
  • Proficient in infrastructure automation tools (Ansible, Terraform, Python scripting).
  • Experience managing observability platforms (Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, SNMP traps).
  • Strong familiarity with network design principles, IP addressing schemes, NAT, ACLs, and traffic engineering.
  • Experience with hybrid infrastructure (on-prem + cloud), microservice architectures, and SDN.
  • Certifications such as Cisco CCNP/CCIE, Juniper JNCIP/JNCIE, or equivalent.
  • Strong documentation and cross-team leadership skills; able to translate technical needs to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD workflows, GitOps, or containerized networking (CNI, service mesh).
  • Familiarity with AI Tools and AI First mindset
