Job Description:
The Digitalization Co-op will assist with the daily operations of managing digitalization initiatives and driving continual improvement of digitalization-related topics within the Assembly Shop. The qualified co-op should expect to contribute to and improve production Industry 4.0 solutions such as app development, AI-supported vision inspection, process verification systems, and predictive maintenance solutions with cloud infrastructure tools. Key objectives include supporting the team's core responsibilities and ownership/implementation of at least one use case of an identified innovation project to be determined at the start of the rotation.
The qualified intern should expect to contribute and improve in the following functions:
  • Get to know new technologies and different fields of work
  • Support idea generation, proof of concept, process development, and best practice transfer for continuous improvement projects
  • Aid in data visualization and dashboard creation for all levels of Assembly management
  • Create and review technical and user documentation for webpages as applicable
  • Set up low-code app development environments, create basic app frameworks, test apps, and iterate
  • Lead assigned or self-initiated projects focused on process improvements
  • Provide real-time support to production with issues related to new technology for series processes
  • Be responsible for troubleshooting and resolution of IT incidents related to new technology
  • Support new tool installations, modifications, and moves in Assembly
  • Train other production associates in proper tool use and system functions
  • Lead or assist in line trials for new use cases
  • Communicate or present accomplishments and achievements at the end of each semester
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management

Possible projects to be completed during this assignment:
  • Energy Reduction Project: Reduce BMW equipment energy consumption via automation and controls
  • Low-code app development to support process improvement in Oracle APEX and Microsoft PowerApps platforms
  • Digitalization projects including installation of IoT devices and software for predictive maintenance and data analytics
  • Improve equipment uptime with programming improvements and component replacements
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and develop corrective action plans
  • Support new equipment installations for new vehicle models

Assignment Training Plan (Technical and Process Skill Development):
  • Profinet and device networking
  • Problem solving and 8D methodology
  • Microsoft Azure, Power BI, PowerApps
  • Oracle APEX

Assignment Development Plan:
  • Technical knowledge of BMW automation control and messaging systems
  • Data analytics
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Communication and facilitation skills
  • Planning and project management
  • Knowledge of launch and series processes in assembly manufacturing

Qualifications:
  • Degree in Business, Engineering, or Computer Science
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • Project management skills, including excellent time management and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite
  • Detail-oriented and organized
  • Knowledge or interest in Internet of Things (IoT), Industry 4.0, and data analytics is strongly desired
  • Possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (not just in major)
  • Enrolled student status at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States
  • Completed at least 30 credit hours at the time of application
  • Ability to work full-time on-site (40 hours/week)
  • Transfer students must have a GPA from their current university
  • Must attach a copy of unofficial transcript
  • Complete and pass a substance abuse test before the work term
  • Work term dates are August 10th - December 11th, 2026
  • Must be an enrolled students during all three rotations
