What does a part-time iOS developer do?

A part-time iOS developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining mobile applications for Apple's iOS platform, but works fewer hours than a full-time employee. Their tasks typically include writing code in Swift or Objective-C, debugging applications, collaborating with teams, and ensuring apps meet Apple's guidelines. Part-time roles may offer flexible schedules, making them suitable for students, freelancers, or those seeking work-life balance. Despite the reduced hours, part-time iOS developers are expected to deliver high-quality, efficient, and user-friendly apps.

What Does a Part-Time iOS Developer Do?

As a part-time iOS developer, your job is to program software for one or more Apple products. In this role, you may use Apple's IDE, work as a programmer at a computer, test and debug your code, and select the best programming language for the applications you are trying to create. This is a relatively unusual position because most companies that develop software want to complete it as quickly as possible. As a result, part-time iOS developers usually focus on small projects or supporting other developers. The definition of part-time varies by company, but it could include full-length shifts on fewer days each week. Part-time iOS developers sometimes work from home.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part-Time iOS Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part-Time iOS Developer, you need strong proficiency in Swift and Objective-C, experience with iOS frameworks, and a solid understanding of mobile app development principles, often demonstrated by a degree in computer science or relevant experience. Familiarity with Xcode, Interface Builder, version control systems like Git, and knowledge of the App Store submission process are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, time management, and communication skills help you deliver quality code efficiently while collaborating remotely or with cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure you can build, maintain, and enhance iOS applications effectively within the flexible demands of part-time work.

The main difference between an Ios Developer Part Time and an Ios Developer Full Time lies in work hours and commitment. Part-time roles offer flexibility and fewer hours, often suitable for freelancers or students, while full-time positions require a standard 40-hour workweek with more stability and benefits. Both roles typically require similar skills and certifications, but the work environment and employer expectations differ.

How do part-time iOS Developers typically collaborate with full-time team members to ensure project continuity?

Part-time iOS Developers often work closely with full-time team members by leveraging clear communication channels such as daily standups, project management tools, and code repositories. They are usually assigned specific tasks or modules that align with their availability, ensuring their contributions fit seamlessly into the larger project. Regular check-ins, thorough documentation, and transparent progress updates help maintain alignment and minimize disruptions. This collaborative approach ensures that all team members stay informed and that the project maintains momentum despite varying work schedules.

UI/UX Designer (Figma)

Heirloom

Mount Pleasant, SC • On-site

Job description

UI/UX Designer (Figma)
Hybrid in Charleston, SC
Schedule: Flexible hours
Engagement: PT, FT, Contract; Possible equity.
About Heirloom
Heirloom helps families rescue, organize, and enjoy their most meaningful memories-digitizing tapes, film, and photos into a private, secure home for stories. We're building delightful mobile and web experiences that make sharing memories simple, safe, and emotionally resonant.
The Role
We're looking for a product-minded UI/UX Designer with deep Figma expertise to own end-to-end design for both mobile (iOS/Android) and web. You'll shape flows (onboarding, upload, sharing, viewing, billing), craft a modern design system, and partner closely with product, engineering, and leadership.
What You'll Do
  • Design end-to-end product experiences for mobile and web: flows, wireframes, high-fidelity UI, and clickable prototypes in Figma.
  • Build and maintain a design system (components, variants, auto-layout, tokens) for speed and consistency.
  • Prototype and validate: run quick tests, incorporate feedback, and iterate with data.
  • Partner with engineering: deliver clean specs via Figma Dev Mode, redlines, and handoff notes; support implementation and QA.
  • Elevate accessibility (contrast, type, color, motion, focus states) and responsive behavior.
  • Tell the story: document decisions, present work to stakeholders, and advocate for the customer.

What You'll Bring
  • 2-6+ years designing mobile and web apps in Figma (agency or product).
  • A strong portfolio with at least one mobile app and one web app case study showing problem framing, options explored, and final impact.
  • Mastery of Figma: components/variants, auto-layout, variables/tokens, interactive prototypes, FigJam.
  • Solid grasp of product thinking (prioritizing flows that move core KPIs like activation, upload success, sharing).
  • Experience collaborating with engineers (design specs, dev handoff, feasibility).
  • Working knowledge of platform patterns (iOS Human Interface Guidelines, Material Design) and responsive web.
  • Care for accessibility and performance-aware design.

Nice to Have
  • Familiarity with media management UX (galleries, viewers, timelines, reels).
  • Comfort with design tokens / theming and basic front-end concepts (Tailwind/CSS, React patterns).
  • Experience in consumer subscriptions, onboarding, and payments.
  • Interest in privacy-first and trust-centric design.

How We Work
  • Flexible hours with core overlap for collaboration.
  • Remote-friendly, with preference for hybrid collaboration in Charleston, SC (work sessions with leadership, user tests, occasional shoots).
  • We welcome contractors, part-time, or full-time; contract-to-hire is an option. Equity available for the right fit.
