Job description
***Recruitment Range: $70,000 - $110,000 Annually***
Who we are:
The North Carolina House Majority is seeking qualified candidates to apply for its expanding Oversight and Investigations team.
This office serves as the enforcement and improvement mechanism of the North Carolina House of Representatives. When agencies disregard statutes enacted by the legislature, when local governments misuse taxpayer funds, when schools disregard parental rights, or when public institutions refuse to comply with State law, this team brings such failures and defiance to light. The team also actively partners with agencies and outside experts to cut wait times, measure outcomes, and ensure taxpayers see real value from government.Â
What you will do:Â
Our investigative counsel is crucial to legislative oversight. In this role, you willÂ
work directly with Republican members of the House Oversight Committee to prepare for hearings and examinations,
pursue records, data, and timely answers from state and local government agencies, schools, and others to guide investigations and committee hearings,
develop precise, productive lines of questioning designed to probe agency testimony, challenge unsupported claims, and establish a clear public record during oversight proceedings, and
work closely with the Staff Director and senior counsel in leadership offices to coordinate legal strategy, legislative strategy, committee hearings, and accountability efforts.
As Investigative Counsel for staff of the Joint Legislative Commission on Governmental Operations (Gov Ops), you will work closely with the staff director, counsel in the Speaker's office, counsel in the Majority Leader's office, and legislative members. You will need to think strategically about North Carolina law, judicial precedent, administrative code, and government practice.Â
This role offers a rare opportunity to hold government accountable with real authority, direct access to leadership, and room to build your own abilities.
Who you are:
Possess an active license to practice law in North Carolina.
Experience in prosecution, discovery, or political environments.
Strong work ethic and intellectual curiosity with an interest in the legislative process, oversight, and investigative work.
Ability to write quickly with clarity and concision.
Commitment to accountability and effective government.
Professional judgment and discretion when handling sensitive materials.Â
The NC General Assembly offers:
- Paid vacation, sick, parental, and community service leave.
- Longevity pay after 36 months of State service with the General Assembly.
- Participation in health insurance options, a defined benefit retirement plan, supplemental retirement plans 401(k) and 457, and the NCFlex program (numerous high-quality, low-cost benefits on a pre-tax basis).
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience: We will only consider candidates with an active license to practice law in North Carolina.
SUPPLEMENTAL AND CONTACT INFORMATION:
