Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a highly motivated and detail-orientated Program Manager for the Center for NeuroMetabolism (CNM) at the Child Health Institute of NJ at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The primary role of the Program Manager is to support and advance the scientific, administrative, and strategic functions of CNM-administered faculty and staff. The Program Manager will provide high-level oversight and coordination of sponsored research activities associated with CNM, including supervision of grant support personnel, identification of appropriate federal and non-federal funding opportunities, and facilitation of timely and compliant grant application development and submission using the Rutgers Research Administration and Proposal Submission System (RAPSS). In this role, the Program Manager will advise faculty and supervise CNM staff involved in grant-related activities, demonstrating working knowledge of grant submission processes and required Rutgers, federal, state, and foundation materials, while maintaining the ability to quickly learn and adapt to evolving internal and external research administration systems. The Program Manager will participate in CNM decision-making processes, including faculty recruitment activities and the planning and execution of CNM scientific events. The Program Manager will supervise CNM program support staff responsible for communications and marketing and will contribute directly to the development of high-level scientific content that highlights CNM research programs and faculty accomplishments. Working closely with the CNM Director, the Program Manager will support the Center's scientific vision and strategic goals and contribute to initiatives that promote collaborative, translational, and bench-to bedside neuroscience research. A broad knowledge of neuroscience and metabolism-related research and a demonstrated ability to operate at the interface of science, strategy, and administration are required.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

• In collaboration with the Director of the Center for NeuroMetabolism (CNM), identify and evaluate appropriate federal and non-federal funding opportunities that support the Center's scientific priorities, long-term performance, and national visibility, and oversee dissemination of funding information through CNM communication channels.
• Provide strategic guidance to CNM faculty, administrators, and staff on proposal development, funding mechanisms, and grant application requirements for federal, state, foundation, and industry sponsors, with emphasis on complex and collaborative submissions.
• Provide high-level oversight of CNM pre-award grant activities by supervising the Grant Specialist and ensuring timely, coordinated, and compliant submission of grant applications developed by the Director and CNM-affiliated faculty.
• Review collaborative research proposals prior to submission to ensure alignment with CNM scientific priorities and compliance with university and sponsor policies and procedures, including IRB, IACUC, and IBC requirements, in coordination with appropriate institutional offices.
• Maintain and curate an up-to-date inventory of shared core facilities, technical resources, and institutional infrastructure relevant to CNM research, and support their strategic inclusion in grant applications and reports.

Minimum Education and Experience

• This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in neuroscience or a closely relevant biomedical science, plus 5 years of experience working in a research environment and experience in academic neuroscience environments required.
• Two (2) years of relevant supervisory experience required.

• The successful candidate must possess exceptional English writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize complex scientific concepts for diverse audiences, including faculty leadership, trainees, funding agencies, and external stakeholders.
• The role requires demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within and across multidisciplinary teams, to mentor and guide staff and trainees, and to operate as a trusted partner to senior scientific leadership.
• Significant experience contributing to, coordinating, and writing collaborative grant applications is required, including familiarity with NIH funding mechanisms and center- or consortium-level proposals.
• The candidate must have working knowledge of research compliance frameworks relevant to academic neuroscience, including experience interacting with or contributing to IRB, IACUC, and IBC processes, as well as a general understanding of federal, state, and institutional regulations governing sponsored research activities.
• Experience navigating academic research administration environments and collaborating with grants management personnel is expected, though the role emphasizes strategic and scientific leadership rather than routine transactional grant administration.
• Strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously, and comfort working under time pressure to meet strategic deadlines are essential.
• Proficiency with standard productivity and communication software (including Microsoft Office applications and virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom and WebEx) is required, along with the ability to rapidly learn and adapt to institutional research systems and evolving administrative tools.
• The successful candidate should also demonstrate an ability to contribute to scientific communications and public facing content, with a broad understanding of how to present neuroscience research to both specialized and lay audiences in support of the Center's mission and visibility.

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive postdoctoral research experience demonstrated by a strong record of peer-reviewed publications in major neuroscience journals preferred.
• Prior involvement in federally funded research programs and experience supporting or leading large, multi-investigator initiatives is strongly preferred.

• Physical Demands: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. Sitting at computer for length of time. Manual dexterity and vision sufficient for computer data entry and data analysis. May need to lift small objects/packages up to 25 pounds. Must be able to perform detailed work, work productively under time constraints to meet multiple grant submission deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.
• Work Environment: Fast-paced office setting. Moderate background noise. This position requires occasional evening and weekend hours as needed to meet grant submission deadlines and host CNM activities and events.
