Position Title Lab Technician/inventory officer Job Description
Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Lab Technician/Inventory Officer to join NSEH department at Mississippi Valley State University. The ideal candidate will be responsible for organizing chemicals and lab equipment for easy access, monitoring lab activities, and maintaining a safe and efficient laboratory environment. This role involves preparing Biology, Chemistry teaching labs each week, conducting safety workshops, managing inventory, and supporting both students and faculty. Additionally, the Lab Technician/Inventory Officer will ensure that labs are always clean and safe, clean glassware and lab equipment are available and ready for use, and that science teaching labs are prepared each week as per faculty requests.
Key Responsibilities:
Lab Preparation and Monitoring:

  • Prepare science labs such as Biology, Chemistry, each week as requested by faculty.
  • Work with faculty to assist in chemical and equipment needs for teaching and research labs.
  • Monitor lab activities to ensure compliance with safety protocols and procedures
  • Conduct lab safety workshops at the beginning of each semester

Inventory Management:

  • Organize chemicals and lab equipment for easy access.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of lab equipment for the department.
  • Create efficient systems for tracking equipment with inventory numbers.
  • Assist in enforcing equipment/inventory transfers, implementing rules and regulations.
  • Conduct internal equipment audits every semester and collaborate with the university's inventory unit.
  • Keep records of all transfers and orders in an organized way
  • Report the status of supplies and commodities to the department chair and faculty on a regular basis.

Procurement and Vendor Relations:
  • Conduct online and paper requisitions for lab equipment, supplies, and commodities.
  • Follow up on orders and contracts with vendors.
  • Resolve any discrepancies or problems related to purchasing to ensure a smooth flow of operations in the labs.

Student and Faculty Support:
  • Assist students by providing information or directing them to appropriate offices.
  • Support students in their lab activities.
  • Attend department faculty and staff meetings to stay informed and provide input.

Lab Safety and Maintenance:
  • Maintain proper chemical storage and ensure lab safety and cleanliness at all times.
  • Ensure that clean glassware and lab equipment are available and ready for use.
  • Ensure the labs are organized and equipped to facilitate efficient and safe operations.
