Who Are We?

At Vertiv, we're on a mission to empower the people who power the future. From life-saving healthcare systems to high-performance computing, we design, manufacture, and service the products and solutions that keep the world connected. With over $8 billion in annual sales and operations in more than 130 countries, Vertiv is uniquely positioned to deliver greater value to our customers and create new opportunities for our people.

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team supporting the design, development, and support of data center rack, enclosure, and infrastructure products.

Position Summary

As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Vertiv, you will be responsible for the design, development, and support of data center rack, enclosure, and infrastructure products throughout the product lifecycle. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to translate technical, customer, manufacturing, and business requirements into innovative, manufacturable, and cost-effective solutions.

This position requires strong mechanical design skills, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with stakeholders across engineering, product management, manufacturing, operations, supply chain, quality, and commercial teams. The successful candidate will contribute to product development activities from concept through production release and ongoing product support while ensuring designs meet performance, quality, compliance, cost, and schedule objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical solutions for data center racks, enclosures, and related infrastructure products.
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings using Autodesk Inventor, with secondary support using PTC Creo and Autodesk Inventor.
  • Translate technical, customer, manufacturing, and business requirements into robust mechanical designs that balance performance, cost, manufacturability, quality, compliance, and schedule objectives.
  • Support projects throughout the product lifecycle, including requirements definition, concept development, detailed design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing implementation, production release, and ongoing product support.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define requirements, develop solutions, resolve technical issues, and support successful project execution.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing engineering, suppliers, operations, and quality teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, production-ready, and aligned with business objectives.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturability, design-for-assembly, cost optimization, standardization, and product reuse principles to improve product quality, scalability, and efficiency.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation including CAD models, drawings, bills of material, specifications, and engineering change records within applicable ERP and PLM systems.
  • Support prototype builds, product validation activities, manufacturing implementation, and change management efforts as required.
  • Identify technical risks, resolve design and manufacturing challenges, and implement effective solutions that support project objectives and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to process improvements, design standardization efforts, and lessons-learned activities that improve execution quality and support future product development.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • 5-10 years of mechanical engineering experience in product design, sheet metal design, manufacturing-focused engineering, product development, custom engineered products, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling; Autodesk Inventor required, Creo preferred.
  • Experience creating and maintaining engineering drawings, bills of material, specifications, and engineering change documentation.
  • Working knowledge of ERP and PLM systems used to support engineering release and product lifecycle processes.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and make sound engineering decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with customers, suppliers, manufacturing teams, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Experience with sheet metal product design, preferably within the enclosure, rack, data center, telecommunications, or technology infrastructure industries.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with sheet metal and other manufacturing, welding, and powder coating processes.
  • Experience working within structured product development and phase-gate engineering environments.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as Oracle PD Cloud or Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Experience with PLM systems such as Autodesk Vault, Windchill, or Agile.
  • Understanding of industry standards, regulatory requirements, and engineering best practices.
  • Experience with automation, rule-based design, scripting, or AI-assisted engineering tools such as iLogic, Python, C#, C++, or similar technologies.

What Will Make You Successful?

  • Strong ownership and accountability.
  • Sound engineering judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Customer-focused mindset balanced with quality, manufacturability, cost, and schedule objectives.
