What is an interviewer?

Interviewers are professionals responsible for conducting interviews with job candidates, clients, or other individuals to assess their qualifications, skills, or opinions. Their main role is to ask relevant questions, evaluate responses, and determine whether the individual is a good fit for a position or purpose. Interviewers may work in various fields such as human resources, journalism, market research, or academic admissions. They help organizations make informed decisions by collecting and analyzing information from interviewees.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an interviewer?

To thrive as an Interviewer, you need strong communication skills, active listening, and the ability to assess candidates objectively, typically supported by experience in human resources or recruiting. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), video conferencing platforms, and structured interview frameworks is often required. Empathy, professionalism, and critical thinking help Interviewers build rapport with candidates and evaluate responses effectively. These skills ensure fair, insightful hiring decisions and a positive candidate experience.

What challenges do interviewers face and how can they be addressed?

Interviewers often face challenges such as unconscious bias, managing time effectively during interviews, and ensuring consistency across candidate assessments. To address these, it's important to use standardized interview questions and structured evaluation forms, which help create a fair and objective process. Additionally, interviewers can benefit from training on diversity and inclusion, as well as practicing active listening to better evaluate each candidate's responses. Collaborating with other team members to calibrate expectations and feedback also helps ensure a balanced and informed hiring decision.

What is the difference between Interview vs Recruiter?

While an interview involves evaluating candidates for a position, a recruiter focuses on sourcing, screening, and coordinating candidates throughout the hiring process. Both roles are essential in recruitment but serve different functions within the hiring ecosystem.

How do I become an interviewer?

To become an interviewer, you typically need strong communication and interpersonal skills, relevant experience in the field you will interview for, and sometimes training in interview techniques or certifications. Gaining experience in the industry or role you wish to interview for can improve your effectiveness, and familiarity with interview questions and assessment methods is also beneficial.

What are the 5 types of job interviews?

Job description

Director of Product

New York

You don't just build software. Under your leadership, teams of people create meaningful solutions that address customer needs and drive business direction and growth. You will be the cornerstone of our startup, supporting and collaborating with all aspects of the business, from sales to marketing to customer success and support. Your leadership will bring the best out of others and stretch them to hit goals they thought impossible. You are an entrepreneur and your first love (perhaps after your lovely/handsome significant other) is creating something meaningful out of nothing.

Hi. We're Take the Interview ("TTI") and we're changing the way companies interview and engage with talent. Our mission is to disrupt the traditional recruiting process and transform the way companies engage with their candidates. Why join us? We're solving big problems for major brands like Zappos, NBCUniversal, and Airbnb. We're a growing technology startup located in the heart of NYC. We have fun, learn constantly and challenge one another to be the best we can be.

What you will do here:

As our Director of Product, you'll collaborate closely with key stakeholders throughout the company, including our CEO, exec team and board, along with clients and advisors. Early on, you'll learn the inner workings of our software and the world of recruiting tech, and you'll need to build a clear perspective of where our industry is going and how we fit into this ecosystem.

2017 is an exciting year for TTI as we prepare to go through a rebrand and launch a new product. Armed with a clear mission set by our CEO, you'll have ownership of the product roadmap and will be required to synthesize the data, opinions, and feedback from clients and stakeholders to make prioritization decisions and build a customer-driven product. You'll be reinforcing the product vision non-stop to ensure everyone deeply understands where we're heading and why we're on that path.

Early on, you'll need to set up analytics and success metrics for our products and establish an effective process for product decision-making (e.g. scorecards, etc.). You'll get up to speed on our current roadmap, the processes and team in place, and establish effective communication channels for working with our office in NYC and Belgrade. You'll begin to prioritize the roadmap for Q2-3 and work closely with the engineering team to build an amazing product using agile principles.

What we need in this role:

  • A proven track record running product teams for successful enterprise B2B SaaS startup.
  • The ability to create a strong product culture where continuous testing, rapid prototyping, learning, and building a scalable platform are all a priority
  • Someone who has seen the development and delivery of a new product from end-to-end
  • Ownership of product roadmap across multiple teams and multiple products
  • A bias towards action; an entrepreneur who innately understands that history belongs to the doers
  • Must be able to inspire and motivate the company and get everyone moving in the same direction.
  • A collaborator that works effectively with hackers, hustlers and designers, both remote and local, inter- and across-departmental, and internal and external to the company
  • Someone driven by empathy for customers and possessing a strong desire to identify and solve people-centric problems
  • A consensus builder who inspires everyone to work in the same direction
  • A lifelong learner; someone who is always growing and evolving and believes the best idea should always win (regardless of where it comes from)
  • Deep understanding of agile and how to work effectively within it's framework
  • Experience managing a team of product owners and designers
  • As this is a leadership role, we need someone local to, or willing to relocate to the NYC area

Additional Information on TTI:

  • You will be put through a structured interview process
  • In evaluating you as a candidate, we commit to prioritize your results over your pedigree
  • We commit to moving quickly throughout the process, from application to offer
  • We promise to be real and extremely transparent, warts and all. Humility is a value shared at all levels of the organization
  • We offer great benefits, including covering 100% of employee's health insurance, a 401(k) plan, and equity for all our employees
  • We have an office Chihuahua and he goes by Tchotchke (and he has been known to leave land mines every once in a while...)
