Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary
Writing tutors help students with the writing process and not with editing papers. Writing Center tutors may work one-on-one/or with small groups of students on every aspect of the writing process including (but not limited to): topic organization, outlining, grammar, punctuation, style, and citation (APA & MLA).
Tutors provide writing assistance for a broad range of academic activities: assigned papers; creative work; laboratory reports; research papers; cover letters for internship or jobs.
Upon request, tutors work with college instructors to provide special assistance to groups and individuals in writing and critical reading. Tutors may also be asked to work regularly with students who speak English as a second language or students with special needs or circumstances.
Required Education
Bachelor's degree/Master's degree.
Required Experience
Writing Center tutors must have demonstrated significant writing ability. Writing tutors must understand the structure of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays. Along with essay knowledge, writing tutors should have a good understanding of grammar mechanics as well.
Preferred Education
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a writing intensive program of study.
Preferred Experience
Experience tutoring college level students and with developmental education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Writing Center tutors must support their staff colleagues in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of this support service.
Writing Center tutors must maintain the confidentiality of our students and services.
Writing Center tutors must be dependable and punctual in their duties, in the completion of assigned tasks, and in notifying the campus dean when conflicts or problems occur.
Writing Center tutor duties include: tutoring members of the Wise campus community; preparing written reports of each tutoring session; maintaining orderliness and operation of the Center; notifying the campus dean of needs or difficulties; providing input and suggestions to improve the Writing Center operation; other tasks as assigned by the campus dean.

Ability to treat all persons with respect, dignity and justice, without discrimination based upon age, sex, race, color, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation or gender identity; ability to exercise the highest professional and ethical standards in the use of College time and resources and observe the stated policies and procedures of the College.
Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with students, staff, faculty and administrators.
