The Student Administrative & Development Intern supports Appalshop's daily office operations while assisting with fundraising and donor engagement efforts. This role offers hands-on experience in nonprofit administration and development, providing exposure to community-centered organizational work in a creative, mission-driven environment. The intern will work closely with staff to support internal systems, communications, and development activities while gaining practical skills in nonprofit operations.


Organization Description: Appalshop is an arts and culture center located in Whitesburg, KY. Since 1969, they have been producing films, plays, and radio about the Central Appalachian Region. Appalshop houses the world's largest collection of Appalachian materials in their Archive. Appalshop began in 1969 as part of the War on Poverty during Lyden B. Johnson's presidency. The goal was to train low-income youth in media. The expectation was that they would move away and use these skills to find work. Instead, they stayed and made Appalshop what it is today.


Internship Duties, Responsibilities, and Career Competencies:

Administrative & Operations Support:

  • Organize digital and physical files. (P, CSD, T)
  • Answer phones and assist with scheduling and correspondence. (C, TW, P)
  • Support data entry, office systems, and basic reporting. (CSD, T)
  • Assist with mailings, supplies, and general office organization. (CSD, T)

Development & Fundraising Support:

  • Update donor and contact records. (C, CSD, T)
  • Prepare thank-you notes and supporter communications. (C, P)
  • Assist with fundraising events and outreach materials. (C, TW, P, CSD, CTR, L)
  • Support basic donor and grant research. (CSD, CT, T)

General Support:

  • Assist staff with projects and events as needed. (C, TW, P)

Qualifications:

    • A current UPIKE student or recent graduate with interest/major/minor in Business, Finance, Community Engagement, or relevant field.
    • Organized, reliable, and detail-oriented.
    • Basic computer skills (Google Workspace preferred).


  • Interest in nonprofits, arts, fundraising, or community work is a plus.

Terms: Upon hire, the intern must register for the Summer II Internship course. To receive course credit, students will complete assignments concurrently with internship work. Students are required to work a total minimum of 80 hours and will eligible for the following credit hours: 80-119 hours of work + course completion = 2 credit hours; 120-159 hours of work + course completion = 3 credit hours; 160-199 hours of work + course completion = 4 credit hours; 200-239 hours of work + course completion = 5 credit hours; 240+ hours of work = 6 credit hours. Summer interns in this position cannot exceed 40 hours of work per week.
