What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an unmanned aerial system intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UAS Intern, you need a foundational understanding of drone technology, aeronautics, and basic programming or engineering principles, often supported by ongoing or completed coursework in related fields. Familiarity with flight control software, GIS mapping tools, and FAA Part 107 certification are typically beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork skills set top candidates apart. These competencies are crucial to ensure safe operations, data accuracy, and successful collaboration on complex UAS projects.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an internship in unmanned aerial systems?

As an intern in Unmanned Aerial Systems, you'll typically work on a mix of hands-on and analytical tasks, such as assisting with flight planning, conducting test flights, collecting and processing aerial data, and supporting routine maintenance of UAVs. You'll likely collaborate with engineers, pilots, and data analysts, gaining practical experience in both field operations and office-based data management. Interns may also contribute to research, participate in safety briefings, and help troubleshoot technical issues, making this role an excellent opportunity to build foundational skills while exploring various facets of the UAS industry.

What is an internship in unmanned aerial systems?

An Internship in Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) is a temporary, hands-on training position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience working with drones and related technologies. Interns may assist with drone operations, maintenance, data collection, and regulatory compliance, often under the supervision of experienced professionals. These internships provide valuable exposure to the UAS industry and can help interns develop technical, analytical, and operational skills needed for future careers in the field.
