Job description

City of Fort Wayne
Ready to get hands-on and learn how a city fleet really runs?
If you're mechanically curious, enjoy working with your hands, and want real-world experience-not just shadowing-this internship is for you.
What You'll Do
  • Assist technicians with preventive maintenance and basic servicing of City vehicles and equipment
  • Conduct visual inspections and report abnormal conditions
  • Safely move and porter vehicles within shop and work areas
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and workspaces according to safety standards
  • Support daily shop operations and general maintenance activities

What We're Looking For
  • High school diploma or equivalent (or currently pursuing)
  • Interest in automotive, diesel, mechanical, or skilled trades fields
  • Basic mechanical knowledge or related coursework preferred
  • Strong safety awareness and ability to follow instructions
  • Valid Indiana Driver's License (or ability to obtain within 6 months)

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this internship, participants will be able to:
  • Demonstrate safe use of hand and power tools in a fleet environment
  • Identify basic vehicle and equipment components and common maintenance needs
