Job description

Intro

The Desert of Maine Campground is a small, one-of-a-kind campground in Freeport, Maine located on the edge of the famous sand dunes of the Desert of Maine. The "campground" (if you can call it that) is comprised of 31 Instagram-ready A-frames, cabins, geodesic domes, and glamping tents nestled among tall pines tree with a beautiful Bath House building and a new Spa opening this year. We obsess over every tiny detail to create a truly magical experience for guests so they can step back from their busy lives for a minute, unwind, and remember what really matters.

Qualifications

Our vision is not possible without an elite team of truly exceptional housekeepers who share the following traits and characteristics:

  • Perfectionist - High standards and an almost pathological attention to detail
  • Self-Starter - We need people who are smart, creative, and naturally hard-working who are allergic to being micro-managed.
  • Aspirational - On one level this is a job like any other that pays the bills, but we aim for it to be more than that. We are seeking people who want to be part of something bigger, build something to proud of, something that makes a positive impact, something that feels like more than a job.
  • Experience - Housekeeping is a demanding job that requires a certain kind of personality. We want people who know for certain this is a role they can thrive in.
  • Rock solid reliability - We need people that show up every day and put in their best effort because it's just who they are
  • Good teammate - This is a small company--less than 10 people--so everyone here gets their hands dirty and we function as a cohesive, supportive team. You will work most of the day on your own, with earbuds in if you want, but we need people that also like being part of a solid group of co-workers that have each other's backs.
  • Sense of humor - You don't need to be a comedian, but it makes a huge difference if you can at least laugh at yourself and the stressful situations that arise from day-to-day. Life is too short to take ourselves too seriously!
  • Quick - We give our housekeepers as much time as they need to do things the right way, but everyone here naturally has a spring in their step. If you're slothy by nature, this may not be the best fit for you.
  • Customer service Love - Every soul-sucking corporation puts "customer service" on their brochure even though the phrase has lost all its meaning. We're not afraid to say that what we're aiming for at the Desert of Maine Campground is much deeper than that. It's love--love for each other, love for our guests, love for ourselves, love for the little things... What we are trying to create is a place where guests can slip into a sense of magic and wake up again to what really matters in this short life. Love. That's all that matters in the end.
The Role

Reporting to the Housekeeping Managers, a seasoned veteran and frontline housekeeper herself, you will carry out daily turnovers of our 31 cabins/tents, Bath House, Sauna, and Fitness Center buildings. Unlike hotels or residential cleaning jobs, we are not mindlessly rushing through the same list of tasks every day. Instead, we are trying to create a space that makes guests feel like they are first person who has ever stayed here. Every tiny detail matters, so that means our housekeeping team is entrusted with doing whatever it takes to create a magical experience for guests. But, like any housekeeping role, there are the basics:

  • Scrubbing sinks, showers, toilets
  • Changing bed linens and towels, gathering used linens for laundering
  • Cleaning furniture, floors, windows, mirrors, and counters
  • Replacing small items that show signs of wear such as mugs, rugs, soap dispensers, etc.
  • Restocking soap, paper towels, toilet paper, coffee and tea, and other supplies
  • Reporting any maintenance issues found to our friendly and talented maintenance team
  • Checking and updating our home-built housekeeping and task management app on your personal iPhone or Android device
  • Keeping all common spaces looking their best
  • Thinking of creative ways we could be more efficient and deliver a better experience for guests
Other Information
  • This is a part-time (with potential for more!) position from May through the end of November. We vary our schedules but regular weekend shifts are required since that is when we are busiest. Shifts start around 8:00AM or 9:00AM and end when we have finished all sites that are turning over that day. Some days can be shorter if we don't have as many turnovers, but we usually work a full day.
  • We are seeking individuals who can either commit to a set weekly schedule and preference will be given to those who can regularly work both Saturday and Sunday (or at least one weekend day, since that is when we are busiest).
  • The hourly rate depends on experience but housekeepers also keep 100% of the tips for sites they clean, which can be significant at a luxury place like this.
  • Applicants must be able to operate a small golf cart, lift at least 30 lbs, and perform tasks which involve reaching, bending, stretching, walking up and down steep inclines, and climbing up and down ladders (our domes have lofts!).
  • Housekeeping staff work where guests are present so you would be expected to interact with the guests in a professional, friendly manner, help them as needed, and answer questions.

The Desert of Maine Campground is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to being a diverse and inclusive workplace that supports, inspires, and respects all individuals and in which personnel processes and hiring practices are inclusive, fair, and merit-based. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, veteran status, or other characteristics protected by law.
