Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer information

What does an internship software defined radio engineer do?

An Internship Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer assists with the development, testing, and optimization of radio communication systems that use software to process signals instead of traditional hardware components. Interns typically support senior engineers by working on tasks like signal analysis, coding in languages such as Python or C++, and using SDR platforms like GNU Radio or USRP. This role provides hands-on experience with radio frequency (RF) concepts, digital signal processing, and wireless communication protocols. Interns also gain exposure to debugging, documentation, and the integration of SDR solutions into larger communication systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship software defined radio engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of digital signal processing, wireless communication principles, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or C++, typically supported by coursework or a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with SDR platforms like GNU Radio, MATLAB, or USRP hardware, as well as relevant certifications or lab experience, is highly valuable. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills to excel in collaborative and research-driven environments. These skills and qualifications enable successful development, testing, and innovation in radio communication systems.

What types of projects and technologies will I typically work with as an internship software defined radio engineer?

As an Internship Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer, you will often work on projects involving the development, simulation, and testing of wireless communication systems using SDR platforms like GNU Radio or USRP devices. Your daily tasks may include writing and debugging code in languages such as Python or C++, configuring radio hardware, and analyzing signal data to improve system performance. You'll collaborate closely with senior engineers and researchers, gaining hands-on experience in areas like modulation, demodulation, and digital signal processing. This exposure provides an excellent foundation for understanding real-world wireless communication challenges and prepares you for advanced roles in radio frequency engineering.

What is the difference between Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer vs Software Defined Radio Engineer?

AspectInternship Software Defined Radio EngineerSoftware Defined Radio Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a relevant degree; no professional certification requiredBachelor's or master's in electrical engineering or related field; certifications like FCC or industry-specific credentials may be preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in research labs or tech companies, supervised and learning-focusedFull-time professional roles in R&D, product development, or communications companies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for training, talent development, and research projectsUsed in industry for designing, developing, and testing SDR systems and applications

The main difference is that an Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer is a learning position aimed at gaining experience, while a Software Defined Radio Engineer is a full-time professional role with greater responsibilities and expertise in SDR technology.

Job description

Who we are and what you’ll do

HOLOPLOT is redefining what's possible in professional audio. Our Matrix Array technology enables precise, software-defined control of sound in three dimensions - a fundamentally new approach grounded in physics and realized through purpose-built hardware and software.

Our systems power some of the most ambitious audio installations in the world, including the Sphere in Las Vegas - currently the largest audio installation in entertainment.

The thoughtful integration of electroacoustic, DSP, control, and audio networking platforms will achieve a cohesive solution that meets the demanding technical and operational requirements of the venues we work with.

We're looking for a hands-on Application Engineer to support planning, commissioning, and optimization of HOLOPLOT systems across key US venues and projects.

The ideal candidate is

You are a high-energy, hands-on Application Engineer with experience in professional audio, acoustics, or sound system engineering. You have worked on loudspeaker systems in complex environments such as entertainment venues, theatres, arenas, or immersive audio spaces.

You are practical, technically curious, and confident in fast-moving on-site situations. Your experience may include system tuning, audio networking, signal flow, rigging coordination, venue operations, client-facing project work, demos, or technical training. You are excited by beamforming, spatial audio, and next-generation sound system design.

Main objectives of the role

You'll work at the intersection of cutting‑edge audio technology and real‑world project delivery — supporting system design, on‑site commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer relationships for high‑profile installations.

After a structured onboarding, you'll take ownership of defined work packages and represent HOLOPLOT independently at venues such as Radio City Music Hall, Sphere, and similar projects.

Core responsibilities:

  • Support system design and simulation using HOLOPLOT PLAN, proprietary tools, EASE, and similar software
  • Translate venue and client requirements into practical technical solutions
  • Prepare technical deliverables: simulation results, system proposals, measurement reports, stakeholder documentation
  • Commission, tune, test, and troubleshoot HOLOPLOT systems on‑site
  • Communicate professionally with venue teams, integrators, production crews, and internal colleagues
  • Provide remote and on‑site after‑sales support including venue changes and new shows
  • Assist with product demos, training sessions, and partner education
  • Document project learnings and contribute to workflow improvements and best practices
What you need to succeed in this role
  • 3–6 years of experience in professional audio, acoustics, system engineering, AV integration, or event technology
  • Hands‑on experience planning, installing, testing, or commissioning loudspeaker systems in complex venues
  • Degree or equivalent practical background in acoustics, audio engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field
  • Working knowledge of acoustic simulation tools (EASE, CATT, or similar)
  • Experience with measurement tools (SMAART, EASERA, or comparable)
  • Familiarity with 3D drafting or CAD tools (SketchUp, Revit, AutoCAD) is a plus
  • Strong problem‑solving skills, comfort working in live venue and construction environments, and confidence in demanding customer‑facing situations
  • Ability to work independently on defined tasks after onboarding
  • Clear communication with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
  • High energy, reliability, and a willingness to learn complex technology
  • Frequent (~25% on average, 50% in key project phases) travel within the US; occasional international travel
  • Fluency in English
We offer you

At HOLOPLOT, you’ll work on technology that is redefining professional audio, with direct impact on globally visible projects. You’ll join an international, open‑minded team across applications, software, hardware, product, research, and project delivery, in an environment that offers a high degree of ownership, hands‑on learning, and real growth opportunities.

For our US‑based employees, we offer competitive compensation, flexible working arrangements, and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support wellbeing, financial security, and a productive work setup.
