Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer information

What does an internship software defined radio engineer do?

An Internship Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer assists with the development, testing, and optimization of radio communication systems that use software to process signals instead of traditional hardware components. Interns typically support senior engineers by working on tasks like signal analysis, coding in languages such as Python or C++, and using SDR platforms like GNU Radio or USRP. This role provides hands-on experience with radio frequency (RF) concepts, digital signal processing, and wireless communication protocols. Interns also gain exposure to debugging, documentation, and the integration of SDR solutions into larger communication systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship software defined radio engineer?

To thrive as an Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer, you need a foundational understanding of digital signal processing, wireless communication principles, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or C++, typically supported by coursework or a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with SDR platforms like GNU Radio, MATLAB, or USRP hardware, as well as relevant certifications or lab experience, is highly valuable. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills to excel in collaborative and research-driven environments. These skills and qualifications enable successful development, testing, and innovation in radio communication systems.

What types of projects and technologies will I typically work with as an internship software defined radio engineer?

As an Internship Software Defined Radio (SDR) Engineer, you will often work on projects involving the development, simulation, and testing of wireless communication systems using SDR platforms like GNU Radio or USRP devices. Your daily tasks may include writing and debugging code in languages such as Python or C++, configuring radio hardware, and analyzing signal data to improve system performance. You'll collaborate closely with senior engineers and researchers, gaining hands-on experience in areas like modulation, demodulation, and digital signal processing. This exposure provides an excellent foundation for understanding real-world wireless communication challenges and prepares you for advanced roles in radio frequency engineering.

What is the difference between Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer vs Software Defined Radio Engineer?

AspectInternship Software Defined Radio EngineerSoftware Defined Radio Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recently completed a relevant degree; no professional certification requiredBachelor's or master's in electrical engineering or related field; certifications like FCC or industry-specific credentials may be preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in research labs or tech companies, supervised and learning-focusedFull-time professional roles in R&D, product development, or communications companies
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies for training, talent development, and research projectsUsed in industry for designing, developing, and testing SDR systems and applications

The main difference is that an Internship Software Defined Radio Engineer is a learning position aimed at gaining experience, while a Software Defined Radio Engineer is a full-time professional role with greater responsibilities and expertise in SDR technology.

Through the power of our combined capabilities, we provide deep expertise in Advanced Engineering; Digital Transformation; Electromagnetic Warfare; Interactive Training & Simulation; Physical Sciences Research; Platform Lifecycle Support; and Foreign Military Sales. Unified by decades of trusted performance and expanded through strategic growth, our team applies innovative technologies, engineering rigor, and customer-focused execution to solve complex challenges and accelerate mission success. Guided by our commitment to partnership, precision, and performance, we deliver the scalable solutions and technical excellence our customers depend on-today and into the future.
We are seeking a RF Engineer, Journeyman to support our customer in Crane, Indiana. In this role, you will support the design, integration, test, and evaluation of Electronic Warfare (EW) systems, RF test infrastructure, and associated technologies, with emphasis on RF signal analysis, waveform generation, laboratory and field testing, modeling and simulation, and technical assessment of system performance. This role is closely aligned to customer requirements for RF signal exploitation, software-defined radio environments, RF modeling and simulation, lab and field test support, and rigorous test documentation and reporting. This position is ideal for an engineer who combines strong RF fundamentals with hands-on test experience and a mission-focused mindset. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and evaluation of capabilities that improve the Government's ability to assess RF systems, validate performance, and support operationally relevant test and evaluation activities in secure laboratory and field environments.
This role requires in-person support.
Duties:
  • Support the design, development, integration, testing, and evaluation of RF and EW systems, subsystems, and supporting test infrastructure.
  • Perform RF signal analysis, waveform generation, modulation assessment, and technical evaluation of RF communications and propagation effects.
  • Use RF laboratory and test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers, signal generators, and related instrumentation to construct, acquire, define, measure, and evaluate RF signals and waveforms.
  • Support laboratory, field, and operationally relevant test events, including setup, execution, troubleshooting, data collection, and post-test analysis.
  • Assist with RF modeling and simulation, verification and validation, and assessment of RF coverage, antenna effectiveness, and related performance characteristics.
  • Support analysis of RF hardware architectures, including transmit and receive chains, interfaces, and integration considerations.
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of test procedures, technical documentation, reports, briefs, and recommendations supporting customer decision-making.
  • Support test equipment setup, maintenance, calibration awareness, and technical readiness in both lab and field environments.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams supporting systems engineering, software development, modeling and simulation, and test and evaluation activities.
