| Aspect | Internship Sleep Study Participant | Sleep Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | None or minimal; often high school or college students | Certification (e.g., Registered Polysomnographic Technologist), training required |
| Work Environment | Research settings, sleep labs, hospitals | Sleep labs, hospitals, clinics |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Research institutions, universities | Healthcare providers, sleep centers |
| Common Search & Comparison | Entry-level, research-focused role | Clinical, patient-focused role |
The main difference is that Internship Sleep Study Participants are usually volunteers or students participating in sleep research without formal credentials, while Sleep Technicians are trained professionals responsible for conducting sleep studies and patient care. Interns gain experience, whereas Sleep Technicians perform clinical duties in sleep medicine.

Overview:
The Associate in Research would join a lab at Duke University. The Lab employs a variety of quantifiable tools in order to shed light on neurophysiological and pathological processes in the human brain. In particular, the Lab's research seeks to investigate the important interactions between sleep and epilepsy, develop novel seizure-independent EEG markers of the epileptogenic zone in order to achieve a more accurate diagnosis of epilepsy, and use invasive intracranial EEG to study brain physiology during wakefulness and sleep in order to better delineate normal from abnormal brain activity. The Lab's ultimate goal is to improve the care of people with epilepsy.
Main duties:
* Assisting in communication with the IRB including the preparation of IRB protocols under the supervision of the lab's PI.
* Assisting in identifying, recruiting and consenting eligible healthy controls and patients to participate in EEG research studies.
* Greeting research participants, explaining procedures, installing electrodes for the recording of EEG in our sleep research lab, and performing EEG neuromodulation experience under direct supervision of the lab's PI.
* Assuring the proper functioning of the devices and the recording of data
* Completing forms, compiling data, preparing reports, maintaining records, and files
* Assisting the lab's PI in maintaining the lab's calendar
* Other assigned duties
Preferred Skills:
Experience with recording of EEG, collecting behavioral data and working with IRBs is an asset.
Min Degree Requirements:
Science related masters degree or terminal degree (e.g. Sc.D., M.D., D.V .M)
Other Requirements:Incumbent must be engaged in scientific research that requires a scientific leadership role, and not employed as a research staff member.
