Job Summary

This internship is designed as a 3-year program (with some flexibility on a case-by-case basis),to ideally be completed during a student's sophomore, junior and senior academic years. Students will receive hands-on laboratory experience while helping to support Crocker Science Center laboratory spaces and prepare equipment, supplies and chemicals / biologicals for laboratory courses taught in the College of Science.

Participants will often work as part of a team with other internship members. In addition, they will be working with, learning from, receiving feedback from, and reporting directly to the Manager of Educational Laboratory Facilities at the Crocker Science Center.

Responsibilities

Sophomore Year:

  • Basic prepping and maintenance/upkeep of stockroom areas – includes chemical inventory. Max of 10 hours per week starting, must shadow a team lead in the lab. Second semester 15 hours per week, third semester 20 hours per week depending on performance.

Junior Year:

  • Help with training of sophomore program inductees.
  • Increased role in prepping and maintenance/upkeep of stockroom areas – includes chemical inventory.
  • Advance into team lead position in laboratories or special project. Responsibility over one or more lab courses.

Senior Year:

  • Help with supervision of Junior and Sophomore program members
  • Increased role in prepping and maintenance/upkeep of stockroom areas – includes chemical inventory
  • Basic accounting associated with laboratory costs
  • Attend Dean's Office Staff Meetings
  • Mentor, train, and guide incoming team leads. Shadow Laboratory Specialist on advanced classes.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should have completed and passed (at minimum) an intro level lab course in either Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Advanced labs in these subjects are of course accepted as well, even if an intro level course was not taken. For example, completion of CHEM 1215 OR PHYS 2015 OR BIOL 1615 is sufficient.

Preferences

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of CHEM 1215 OR PHYS 2015 OR BIOL 1615, or more advanced laboratory classes
  • Preferred Freshman entering their Sophomore year Fall 2026
