Job Description Summary

Administrator and Curator responsible for overseeing the day-to-day business of the museum, and for the management and operation of the McGuffey House and Museum, its facilities, collections, and programs.

Job Description

Essential Duties

  • Oversee building and grounds maintenance and upkeep, working with campus partners to identify areas for improvement to safeguard the building and collections.
  • Develop and implement strategic planning for the McGuffey House and Museum, manage its annual budget, identifying strategic needs as well as annual and periodic fundraising activities.
  • Develop collections plan/policy, oversee acquisitions and deaccessioning, document and manage museum collections through database, and coordinate photographic and documentary imaging of collections.
  • Research and disseminate knowledge relevant to the museum's mission and the building and collections, through print and online publications, inclusive exhibitions, classes, educational programs, and tours.
  • Supervise, manage, and train student employees, interns, and museum volunteers, including Docents.
  • Engage with in person and virtual visitors through the museum's website, social media and outreach opportunities with local community and institutional partners.
  • Implement museum and collections policies and procedures in accordance with University guidelines and professional best practices.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to design, create, and deliver educational programs.
  • Work assignments may require advanced knowledge, skills, or abilities. Some independent
  • judgment or initiative.
  • Engage with faculty, staff, students, university guests and visiting researchers to provide access to building and collections and related information.
  • May require a significant amount of physical exertion, adverse hours, or working conditions.
  • Areas of work include the McGuffey House and Museum building and surrounding grounds, the Art Museum, involvement with Museums Miami Center institutions; community spaces outside of Miami University.
  • The position includes the responsibility to supervise student employees, interns, project employees, and volunteers.
  • Attend special events outside of regular office hours when assigned.
  • Represent McGuffey House and Museum in public programs, teaching, guest lectures, workshop presentations, publications, and participation in professional groups.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive working knowledge of exhibition planning and design
  • Professional museum standards and practices
  • Broad general knowledge of world history
  • Familiarity with history, public history research, writing, education

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in History, Library Science or Museum Studies, Education, Art History, or a related arts or humanities field; experience in a museum, library or archive, historic house or historical society, educational institution, or non-profit institution; experience in management of collections and/or archives; experience in digitization best practices; an familiarity with CRM systems.

Consideration may given to candidates with a Master's degree or related professional degree with specialization in a relevant field such as History, Library Science or Museum Studies, Education, Art History, or a related arts or humanities field; Minimum 2 years working in a museum, library or archive, historic house or historical society, educational institution, or non-profit institution; Demonstrated success in grant-writing; Effective working relationships with a variety of representatives, including university faculty, staff, and students, museum staff, volunteers, public and private organizations, K-12 educators, and the general public; Basic computer proficiency (email, data entry, Google Suite or Microsoft Office); Strong verbal and written communication skills; Strong organizational and coordination skills; Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends; Ability to perform essential job functions that require mobility within the facility.
