Job description

Program Overview

Internships at UIG are designed to give students a complete understanding of the construction process - from the field to the office. You'll work alongside experienced engineers, project managers, and safety professionals, gaining exposure to bridge and roadway construction, preconstruction, and estimating.

Our program emphasizes:

  • Safety culture and technical training (OSHA 10 certification provided)
  • Rotational exposure to field operations, project management, and estimating

Responsibilities:

 A few examples of the duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting project managers or field supervisors with coordination and planning
  • Supporting documentation such as RFIs, submittals, and change orders
  • Performing quantity take-offs and participating in scheduling and estimating
  • Assisting with safety inspections, toolbox talks, and compliance checks
  • Participating in team meetings and site walkthroughs
  • Exposure to bridge and roadway construction activities such as drilled shafts, pile driving, forming and pouring caps, beam setting, and deck pours

Qualification Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each key duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Students must be enrolled in a college or university pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or Construction Management.
  • Proficient PC skills including a proficiency in various software used such as Excel, Primavera, and SAP. 
  • Familiarity or a previous internship with construction industry practices is preferred. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with project managers, supervisors, and fellow employees

Physical Demands:

The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Construction Intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.
  • Employee is occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
  • Work may be performed at heights up to 60 feet, requiring climbing ladders, scaffolds, or stair towers
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, based on project need(s) and demand(s).

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job:

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Regular proximity to heavy equipment and moving machinery
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready-mix concrete.
