Description

Overview:
The Door is a multi-service youth development agency serving young people ages 12โ€“24. The Member Services Department is responsible for welcoming and engaging new and existing members, conducting brief interviews and risk assessments, connecting young people to programs and resources, and supporting access to basic needs services in a safe and welcoming environment.

This hands-on internship is ideal for students interested in exploring direct practice social service work, youth development, community engagement, and resource coordination within a multi-service setting. Interns will gain experience engaging with diverse groups of young people, conducting intake interviews, supporting resource distribution, assisting with events and outreach, and learning how multiple systems of care intersect in the lives of youth.

This position offers exposure to youth-centered, trauma-informed practice while helping interns build communication, engagement, assessment, organization, and professional teamwork skills. Interns interested in social work, psychology, counseling, public health, education, nonprofit leadership, or community organizing are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct 1:1 intake interviews and brief psychosocial assessments with prospective members
  • Inform young people about Door programs, services, and eligibility requirements
  • Make referrals based on membersโ€™ interests, goals, and needs
  • Identify and appropriately respond to high-risk concerns disclosed during intake interviews
  • Complete documentation, interview summaries, and data entry related to membership and intake services
  • Direct or escort members to programs and services throughout the building
  • Support the operation of the donation closet and pantry, including processing donations, organizing supplies, and maintaining a clean and welcoming space
  • Assist young people in accessing clothing, hygiene products, pantry items, and other basic needs resources in a respectful and youth-centered manner
  • Support workshops, outreach activities, community events, and special projects as needed
  • Collaborate with fellow interns and staff on a group capstone or youth engagement project during the internship term
  • Assist with administrative and front desk tasks as necessary

Qualifications:

  • Interest in working with adolescents and young adults in a youth development or social service setting
  • Sensitivity to the diverse experiences, identities, and needs of young people
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, boundaries, confidentiality, and reliability
  • Willingness to support both direct service and operational/program support tasks
  • Students entering or studying beyond their third year of college preferred
  • Prior work, volunteer, or leadership experience with adolescents or young adults preferred
  • Basic computer skills required; familiarity with Microsoft Office and Canva is a plus
  • Bilingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply (Spanish or French preferred)

Schedule:

  • Interns commit to two shifts per week for approximately 4 months
  • Flexible scheduling available Mondayโ€“Friday between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM
  • Typical shifts may include:
    • Morning Shift: 9:30 AMโ€“1:30 PM
    • Afternoon Shift: 12:30 PMโ€“4:30 PM
  • Flexibility is available for outreach events or special programming

Training & Expectations:

  • Attendance at required trainings is mandatory, including Door 101, Intake Counselor Training, and Mandated Reporter Training
  • Regular attendance, professionalism, and participation in ongoing workshops and supervision are expected
