We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Sales, Use & Property Tax Senior to join our tax team. This role is responsible for managing indirect tax compliance, audit support, and property tax obligations, while driving process improvements and strengthening internal controls.
The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in sales and use tax compliance, taxability analysis, exemption certificate management, and property tax reporting, as well as hands-on experience with Avalara and ECM.
Responsibilities of the Sales, Use & Property Tax Sr include but are not limited to:
Sales & Use Tax Compliance
• Review and ensure the timely and accurate filing of sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions
• Perform sales and use tax reconciliations between the ERP, Avalara, and the general ledger
• Analyze and validate transaction-level data to ensure proper tax calculation and reporting
Taxability & Nexus Analysis
• Determine taxability of products and services across jurisdictions, including complex and multi-state scenarios
• Support nexus analysis and monitor business activities that may trigger new filing requirements
• Provide guidance to internal stakeholders on taxability and compliance requirements
Exemption Certificate Management
• Oversee exemption certificate review and validation to ensure compliance and audit readiness
• Partner with internal teams and customers to resolve exemption-related issues
• Utilize ECM (CertCapture) to maintain accurate and complete exemption documentation
Audit & Controversy Management
• Manage sales and use tax audits, including data gathering, response coordination, and resolution of audit findings
• Support re-audits, voluntary disclosures, and uncollected tax recovery efforts
• Interface with state and local tax authorities and external advisors as needed
Property Tax Compliance
• Manage property tax renditions and assessments, ensuring timely and accurate filings
• Review assessed values and support appeals where appropriate
• Coordinate with internal teams to ensure accurate fixed asset reporting
Accounting & GAAP Support
• Prepare and review GAAP journal entries related to sales and use tax, including accruals and reserves
• Support balance sheet reconciliations and ensure proper financial reporting of indirect tax accounts
Process Improvement & Controls
• Identify and implement improvements to indirect tax processes, controls, and reporting workflows
• Support automation initiatives within Avalara and ERP systems
• Enhance documentation and audit trail for compliance and SOX readiness
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Partner with Accounting, Finance, IT, and Operations to ensure proper tax treatment of transactions
• Provide training and guidance to business teams on indirect tax matters
Qualifications of the Sales, Use & Property Tax Sr include but are not limited to:
• 3-6 years of experience in sales and use tax and/or property tax
• Strong experience with Avalara and ECM (CertCapture)
• Proven experience with:
• Sales and use tax return review
• Reconciliations (ERP to Avalara to GL)
• Exemption certificate management
• Taxability determinations for products and services
• Audit management and controversy support
• Property tax renditions and assessments
• Experience preparing GAAP journal entries related to indirect taxes
• Strong understanding of multi-state sales and use tax rules and regulations
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
Preferred:
• CPA or CMI
• Experience in a multi-entity or multi-jurisdictional environment
