This role offers a blend of technical consulting, client relationship management, and team leadership, making it an excellent opportunity for a professional who enjoys solving complex tax challenges while building meaningful client relationships.
If you're energized by helping clients navigate difficult tax issues, mentoring team members, and contributing to the growth of a specialized practice, we'd love to hear from you.
What You'll Do
  • Lead multistate sales and use tax compliance engagements, including preparation and review of returns across multiple jurisdictions
  • Advise clients on sales and use tax nexus, taxability determinations, transaction structuring, and indirect tax planning opportunities
  • Manage sales and use tax audits, assessments, and controversy matters with state and local taxing authorities
  • Conduct voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), refund studies, and recovery reviews to identify savings opportunities and reduce risk
  • Assist clients in evaluating the sales and use tax implications of mergers, acquisitions, and business restructuring initiatives
  • Research and interpret evolving state and local tax laws, regulations, and court decisions and communicate their impact to clients and team members
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients by providing practical solutions to complex indirect tax challenges
  • Develop proposals, presentations, and thought leadership content that support client service and practice growth
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships while identifying opportunities to expand advisory services
  • Mentor, train, and review the work of associates and senior staff, supporting their professional growth and development
  • Collaborate with firm leadership to strengthen and grow the State & Local Tax practice

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 5+ years of sales and use tax experience in public accounting or a combination of public accounting and industry/government
  • Strong technical knowledge of multistate sales and use tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements
  • Experience managing audits, voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), and state and local tax controversy matters
  • Strong tax research skills and experience utilizing tax research databases and compliance software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to clients and colleagues
  • Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines simultaneously
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, and developing professional staff
  • Proven ability to build client relationships and contribute to business development efforts

Preferred:
  • CPA license or CMI-Sales Tax (Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation) designation
  • Experience with indirect tax automation solutions such as Avalara, Vertex, or similar platforms
  • Familiarity with ERP and accounting systems
  • Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, and business restructuring projects from a sales and use tax perspective
