What does an RTL design intern do?

An RTL (Register Transfer Level) Design Intern assists in the hardware design process by writing and verifying digital circuits using hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL. Their primary role is to help develop, simulate, and debug design blocks that will eventually be implemented on chips such as FPGAs or ASICs. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, contributing to design documentation, running testbenches, and ensuring designs meet specifications. This internship provides valuable hands-on experience in digital design, verification, and understanding the full hardware development lifecycle.

What types of projects does an RTL design intern typically work on during their internship?

As an RTL Design Intern, you’ll often assist with designing and verifying digital circuits at the Register Transfer Level, which involves writing and debugging HDL code (such as Verilog or VHDL), running simulations, and supporting the integration of modules into larger systems. Interns usually work on real project tasks alongside experienced design engineers, contributing to blocks or subsystems that may be used in actual chip products. This hands-on experience allows you to develop technical skills, learn industry-standard tools, and gain exposure to the collaborative workflow between design, verification, and validation teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RTL design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RTL Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, computer architecture, and proficiency in hardware description languages like Verilog or VHDL, usually supported by coursework in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with simulation tools (such as ModelSim or Synopsys VCS), version control systems (like Git), and debugging environments is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with senior engineers and interpret design requirements. These skills are crucial for producing accurate, efficient RTL code and contributing effectively to complex hardware design projects.

What is the difference between Internship Rtl Design Intern vs Digital IC Design Intern?

Job description

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all.

Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.

As part of the Design for Test (DFT) Engineering team, this role contributes to enabling testability and quality for next-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) products. The team focuses on integrating and validating robust DFT features to support efficient silicon bring-up and yield ramp, working closely with multi-functional engineering groups.

In this entry-level role, the DFT Design Engineer supports the design, simulation, and validation of DFT structures within HBM designs. This includes assisting with scan implementation, test integration, and debug activities while learning standard methodologies from experienced engineers and contributing to high-quality silicon development.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with scan insertion and integration of DFT features including test modes, clocks, resets, and clock control mechanisms
  • Support hierarchical DFT integration for multi-channel or replicated HBM structures and help implement IJTAG and P1500 functionality
  • Run and debug DFT checks such as scan DRC, chain integrity, and X-propagation issues in test mode
  • Support simulation and debug activities including ATPG readiness, test-mode sequencing, and MBIST validation for selected memories
  • Collaborate with RTL, DV, PD, and Product/Test Engineering teams to resolve integration issues and participate in build reviews
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent
  • 0-3 years of experience or relevant internship/research experience in ASIC/SoC design, DFT, or verification
  • Basic understanding of digital design fundamentals including sequential logic, clocks/resets, and timing concepts
  • Experience or familiarity with synthesizable RTL such as SystemVerilog or Verilog
  • Experience working with or leveraging Artificial Intelligence or AI-Enabled tools and workflows in engineering environments, or demonstrated exposure to data-driven methodologies supporting design, validation, or productivity improvements
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic understanding of DFT concepts such as scan, MBIST, or boundary scan/JTAG
  • Exposure to DFT tools or methodologies through coursework, projects, or internships
  • Familiarity with test access mechanisms, ATPG preparation, or gate-level simulation concepts
  • Interest in learning advanced DFT practices and high-speed memory design environments
  • Experience applying Artificial Intelligence or working with AI Assisted or AI Augmented approaches to enhance engineering workflows, debug efficiency, or test methodology development
